I have read of and listened to many cannibal theories with various evidence presented RE: Neanderthals. Considering that there is numerous relatively modern documented accounts of cannibalism in homo sapiens alone it's not even a slight stretch that neanderthals were any different and there is no argument that they were more primitive than say homo sapiens in the last 200y.

The intent of the killings is harder to assert, although again, there are numerous relatively modern accounts of murder occurring on the daily so dont really need many reasons other than 'because I could' let alone starvation, competition for resources or intra/inter-personal reasons.
