Ali was 6'3" with a 78" reach.
Tyson was 5'10" with a 71" reach.
From an essay on such a match up.
Tyson had four legitimate losses (two to Holyfield, one to Lennox Lewis and one to Buster Douglas). All of his tormentors had similar physical characteristics.
Buster Douglas was 6’3” with an 83” reach that gave Tyson major trouble. Douglas danced and delivered the type of shots that Ali would deliver.
Lennox Lewis was 6’5” with an 84” reach that dominated Mike Tyson.
Evander Holyfield was 6’2” with a 78” reach that kept Tyson at bay.
Tyson had a 71” reach which made him most effective in close quarters. His short reach gave him trouble against tall fighters who moved and applied pressure. Ali was a tall fighter that moved and applied constant pressure.▪█─────█▪ Equipment Crew #53 ▪█─────█▪

Although it is considered damn near blasphemous in boxing circles, I strongly believe a prime Mike Tyson would defeat a prime Muhammad Ali. Would it be easy? Certainly not, but I still think the power, explosiveness, inside fighting skills, peek a boo elusiveness and impeccable footwork would be enough to overcome Ali’s superior 80” reach, speed, slipperiness and stamina. Tyson would pressure Ali from round one and cut the ring off, neutralizing his rope a dope. Ali would have some success in jabbing Tyson from the distance and tying him up, however I ultimately think Tyson would have no trouble getting within range to work the body and throw those sneaky combinations, getting the job done somewhere around the 8th round.
That said, the window of opportunity for Tyson would be short. Not only in prime years (‘89 Tyson would already lose to a ‘72 Ali IMO) but also in rounds. If things go past the 10th, I could see Mike’s periodic stamina issues taking hold and Ali winning a close but decisive decision.
I would say prime for prime, Tyson beats Ali 7 times out of 10.
Outside of their primes, Ali takes it 9 times out of 10.

Tyson always says he couldn’t beat Ali. He’s just saying that to appear humble. Deep down he knows he would wreck him.

Dunno, Ali did well against Sonny Liston.
Liston is ranked 2nd in the ESPN.com list of "The Hardest Hitters in Heavyweight History."[82] Johnny Tocco, a trainer who worked with George Foreman and Mike Tyson as well as Liston, said Liston was the hardest hitter of the three.[83] Herb Goldman stated that Liston, when in his prime between 1958 and 1963, was the most feared fighter in boxing history.[84]All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Love Tyson. But if you really think about it, who did he beat? When was he in a war that he won? He'd win by overwhelming and intimidating his opponents. I dont think that would work with Clay. He beat nobodies, and every time someone was game he lost.

I think prime Tyson and Marciano both would beat Ali. But I feel Foreman would beat Tyson and Marciano yet lost to Ali. It’s often about how the styles tend to match up with each other, swarmers like Tyson and Marciano did well against outside fighters, but swarmers often have a hard time with brawlers.

Did Tyson ever fight anyone where he didn’t have a reach disadvantage?
He was always shorter than his opponent from every match I’ve seen, so I don’t really think that Ali being 6’4” is really going to matter much to a prime Tyson.Children groomer, influencer, CEO
