To dispel another myth, Franklin’s kite was not struck by lightning. If it had been, he probably would have been electrocuted, experts say. Instead, the kite picked up the ******t electrical charge from the storm.MАGА 2024. I rep pаtriots, and neg anti-american phægots. No, and there is a common theme of myths surrounding scientific discoveries. It's human nature for people to create legends around important discoveries, perhaps to paint the discoverers in a more down-to-earth, practical light, and also to paint the process of discovery as a sudden "genius" inspirational moment, vs what in many cases in reality is longer periods of hard work/careful thought.
Archimedes jumping out of a bath tub running naked down the streets shouting Eureka: a mythical story relayed by later commentators, almost certainly not true. If Archimedes did have a task to determine the authenticity of a gold crown, likely would have used a scale and his law of buoyancy vs measuring displaced water.
Galileo dropping objects off the Leaning Tower of Pisa and deducing that objects fall at the same time: unlikely to be true, his method seems to be that of a thought experiment, but possibly rolled balls down inclined planes, but not actually dropping balls off the Leaning Tower.
Apple fell on Newton's head, *boink*, giving him the idea of universal gravitation: A myth...it is possible that the "occasion of a falling apple" could have influenced him, but not literally being hit with an apple.
Franklin and the kite While he probably conducted an experiment in Philadelphia in 1752 to deduce electric properties of thunderstorm (read: not to discover electricity, which he didnt), the kite wasnt struck by lightning.
Darwin came up with his theory of evolution based on a Eureka moment concerning Finches on the Galapagos islands during his Voyage of the Beagle: Darwin's theory was the result of his studies and incredible dearth of observations as a life-long naturalist, combined with ideas set out around that time period concerning geology and a slowly changing earth over long periods of time. It is true the Voyage of the Beagle was an important influence, but Darwin didnt even bother with the Finches when he was down there, and the specimens looked at more closely after he was back...they were a piece, just a piece, of the vast naturalistic observations Darwin had accumulated.
Einstein, lazily dozing off at his job as a Swiss patent clerk, had a light bulb go off and came up with his Special Theory of Relativity: While he did work as a patent clerk, Einstein arrived at the Special Theory of Relativity after years of carefully reflecting on the subject of light, electricity, and paying attention to the relevant physics and mathematical discoveries of the time period. It was not a moment of quick inspiration, and although he did likely deal with patents of electrical devices, thats about as far as the connection goes...really not much to do with being a patent clerk.Last edited by numberguy12; 05-19-2022 at 11:39 AM.
