Chicago Police Department retirements soar amid increasing backlash.

The department, which has roughly 13,000 sworn officers, has had nearly 400 officers retire so far this year. That is more than the total number of retirements in 2018. 

Many officers say they are calling it quits due to increased stress in the wake of mass protests and anti-police sentiments, in addition to working 12-hour shifts and having days off canceled.

If retirement trends continue, the department is on track to have the highest retirement numbers in the city's history.

Dave srs question. Can someone opt out of the PERF program? It seems that's the reason you can't get hired when you're around 32-35 or so. If departments are struggling to keep boots on the ground why wouldn't they take a clean, quite in shape (does squats, bench, deads etc) dude?

Yeah but even then there's plenty of good people that might want to get into it but got bit by the bug too late in life. Also depending on the local departments around you it may be an earlier age.

Chicago's population has been such a slow decline it's hardly noticeable. We're talking 0.3 percent a year. 2021 it's actually been gaining people for some reason. It also picked up population in 2018.
