Sometimes. The mRNA is actually safer. This mRNA is actually only coding for the spike protein. There isn't much risk to you. It's just a tag so your immune system detects it. The point of the flu vaccine is to vaccinate you against some of the more commonly identified strains expected to spread around the US. However, considering how widespread flu is, there are many other variants around. It is also possible your "flu" wasn't influenza at all, but rather some other virus. A lot of viruses cause the same general responses in the patient because what you perceive as actually being sick, such as sneezing, coughing, throwing up, fever, loss of appetite, diarrhea, etc are all actually nonspecific immune system responses that protect you from further infection. The point is to statistically reduce the persistence of covid in the population. Increasing the number of vaccinated people reduces the number of susceptible people. This helps a lot with the total number of virus cases in the population. If enough people in your population are infected, you can achieve statistical "herd immunity" which means that it becomes very unlikely for viral infections to propagate in the population due to the low number of susceptible people.
