I want to buy a turbo trainer to keep biking inside in winter and am thinking of getting the Tacx Blue Motion, is that a good choice to start with?

I've already found POV videos of bike rides of awesome places on youtube that will be great to watch while training.

If I like it I may get an interactive one a year or two later.

You will regret it within a week if you buy a dumb trainer.
Ride it like you just stole it.

Centrifugal force divide by gravity squared. Seriously? I think it's inertia. The resistance is on the outside of the tire.

That's right...provides a very tight seal between my full-length bibs and has minimal cutouts on the underside for the cleat. I've tried others from Sugoi, Gore, and Garneau but these are as good as I've found...fairly thick neoprene.

Yes, the angular momentum of the rotating wheels provides directional stability...wheels 'want to continue' rotating about the same axis. The faster they're spinning, the less counter force you need to provide by hand to offset dangling groceries. No doubt you're still adding some counter force, it's just quite small when you're rolling more quickly.

    Bicycle commuter crew.

Used my car too much last winter (our nice season in AZ) and plan to start my vehicle only one or two days per week all winter this year (with the exception of any roadtrips). Should be a fun experiment.

Been doing this since July. Going to work kinda sucks for me, (cold and still sleepy), but going home is great. Actually faster to get home, I don't need to sit in a traffic jam and travel 3 blocks in 15mins. Have a bunch of drinks at or after work and not care.

yep, bicycle commuter crew myself. Only problem for me is that I have 2 pretty massive hills and a whole assload of traffic to ride alongside. That makes freezing weather pretty rough to ride in

Finally got out on the bike last night, got 20 odd miles in with a friend of mine and it was good to just go out for a social ride.

The new DHB Windslam tights were pretty good, the legs are a bit short though but I don't think I would want the next size up everywhere else. Merino socks and overshoes kept my feet toasty.

Anyone else losing their weekday rides after work due to the end of daylight savings time? For the last few weeks, it's been get home, woof down a little food, and then on the bike before it gets too dark. That ends Saturday

I've switched to mornings. I'm not crazy about riding in the dark, but if you get out early enough there's a hell of a lot less traffic to worry about.

That's not a bad idea. I live in the country, and I only see a car every 5 minutes or so!

I've switched to mornings. I'm not crazy about riding in the dark, but if you get out early enough there's a hell of a lot less traffic to worry about.
Just keep in mind that those few motorist that are present are thinking the exact same thing and therefore, may not be away of the unwary intrepid cyclist that might be out with the same mindset. In fact, you may want to be even more cautious. Stay safe.

the thing I like about riding in the dark is it is very very easy to see me, and it's easy for me to see others. I have a pair of tail lights (one steady, one blinking), a pair of headlights (both steady), and one of those Proviz jackets that light up your entire torso.

oh yeah, fun cyclocross race today

Got this badboy turning up today. We floodlight now brahs. Was going to get the Bonty Ion 800R but the battery life and output was better on the Cateye range.

Was only able to Use my Volt 200 on low setting due to poor battery life (1 hour ish at 200 lumens), this should throw out 450 Lumens for 5 hours. Full power might be good for some night riding off road.

Anything over 700 works for off road unless it's world cup DH. But more is always better!

The problem with bright light is that you'll burn through a lot of battery. That means you'll either have a heavy battery or have to carry spares. I love my Niterider Pro 1800, but its way too bright to ever use on the road.

Even at the lowest setting I have to angle it nearly facing towards the ground to keep from blinking motorist. I don't think I've ever needed to use the high setting. I just wanted to be prepare just in case I ever dared venture down a lonely bedroom neighborhood road.

Spot on, my thinking was that my Volt 200 is OK on it's brightest setting, a higher powered light will yield way more hours runtime on low power. I think even on the 1200's lowest setting (17.5hrs runtime) it's brighter than my old light on it's brightest setting.

got a nice set of rollers. been rolling before work... fukin goat man. i would ride in the mornings but i got sick from the cold weather.

i can feel a huge difference in my balance when i mtb. i can do a slow crawl over uphill tech and conserve tons of energy. i did get some jumpers knee, prolly from the frequency of cycling every day so i got a patellar strap.

edit: i have goals to reach at least top 10 in enduro races spring 2018.

where do you lock up your bike? do you bring a extra set of work cloths to change into? how about shoes.. do you wear your cycling cleats?

ive considered this but it seems like a huge hassle

    all depends on your workplace.

my job has indoor, badge-entry bike parking, lockers and stocked showers (i.e. the soap and shampoo and towels are provided).
during the day I wear my cycling cleats (SPDs)
of course, my workplace is very casual with their clothing rules.

I recently got the Fenix BC30R and love it. It's USB rechargeable and has an OLED display that tells you exactly how many hours and minutes of battery life you have at the current brightness setting. It also has a remote you can attach to your handle bar to adjust the brightness without even having to move your hand. The most I got the battery down is 75%, normally it still reads 100% when I'm back home (shows in 25% increments).
