I don't disagree with the notion that transgendered people have something wrong, but I do not think you can say that we are pandering to mental illness by performing these surgeries. These are people who are deeply disturbed. Imagine you looked in the mirror every day, and your body was some kind of alien object to you that you despised.
By performing these surgeries, we are doing our best to increase the quality of life and happiness that these people have. The brain is a very complex thing, and there is no known way to "Fix" their mind. So the only solution, albeit a band-aid one, is to change their body in a way that will please their mind.
