When I'm at the gym , I log my workouts into my phone as I go, I sometimes change the pod cast and once or twice I have used it to look up the proper way to do an exercise. I know that it is by etiquette to text, but now people use it for other things.

You have to follow protocol: you standup, tell everyone your name, then you share.
yeah, I had an older guy complaining to me last week about kids sitting on equipment while playing on their phones. Honestly, I don't know why this guy was so pissed off. Before the smart phone craze people would just sit on equipment and talk for 20 minutes between sets. Nothing has really changed. They are still taking just as long except now they are looking at a screen."Oh I like that, baby. I put on my robe and wizard hat. " -eminemBNJA

Just curious why you think it's bad etiquette to text.
I've been known to text, post on bb.com, search for music, take selfies, respond to e-mail, make shopping lists, etc. while at the gym. All of that pretty much has nothing to do with my workout other than messing around while recovering between sets.
Are there people in my gym judging me for this?

Crushed. If your phone is in your pants pocket (the most practical place to keep it), it gets hit by the bar a lot. Keeping it in any other pocket is just wrong, as is putting it down on equipment.
If you break enough of them, you decide fk it and leave it in the locker.Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!
The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.
They had the technology to rebuild me. They made me better, stronger, faster......

I don't have a cell phone, I don't want a cell phone and I sure don't "need" a cell phone-especially when I'm training.
IMO, there are very few people who can keep their intensity in the gym and go from talking to their buddy straight into a brutal set, that's an Arnold gift.
In between sets I do what I did before cell phones...I pace and prepare to do my next set but better than the last.

Only ever have my phone in the gym if I am working out during typical work time (rarely)
most sessions are at 6 am and at that time nobody is going to call me, and I will not need to call anyone either
I did once see a young dude sat on the end of the bench using his phone to text or e mail
I asked if I could use the bench
he stood up and moved away for me
so I sat on the bench and started sending my text messages
so for anyone else who has an issue , don't worry, most people in the gym are very approachable
and if you want to work in with someone who is texting or e mailing, just ask, and I am sure they will accomodate☻/

Oh, this is genius and I'm not just saying that. Asking someone playing on their phone to "work in" and then you just sit down and do the same thing they were...playing on their phone. I mean it's only fitting and just makes sense. I like things that make sense...I'm a common sense kind of guy. Now I don't bring a phone in myself...too bulky... but I suppose I could run through my little Shuffle thingy.

IDK its really not "just" a phone these days. I record lifts, play music, and record my workouts (apple notes) with my personal handheld device. I also use the phone option if I need to. I have yet to have any intensity issues related to having my PHD with me
