I'm watching the vikings lost rings documentary and Chris Carter said that he called Dennis Green during the first team practice and told him that Moss was the most gifted player that he had ever seen.
What do you guys say?
EDIT: here is the video of carter talking about him

Was Randy Moss really the most gifted player to play in the NFL?

Says the baby who is still mad I don't find his Panthers to be all that impressive and think they'll lose their very first playoff game.
First of all Jerry wasn't as "gifted" as Randy Moss which is why it's confusing that your salty ass even brought his name up.
Secondly, Chris Carter is a goddamn idiot and citing his knowledge to win an argument is laughable at best.
Randy Moss is NOT the most talented football player of all time. Period. He's not.

So I agree stats aren't everything but come on brah. He is 14th in career receptions. 3rd in yardage, behind a drop happy and whiny T.O. He is 2nd in TDs. He is 25th in yards per game.
So football is a team sport so its hard to quantify one person the way you can in a game like baseball. Randy is gifted but calling him the most gifted to ever play in the NFL is a massive stretch.*Misc Mechanical Engineer Crew*

are you retarded? No one is arguing he's the best WR of all time, no one's saying he has the best stats. We're saying he had the most talent
If you were drafting any WR in their prime anyone with a brain would pick Moss
As far as all positions I can't really think of anyone close to him in terms of pure domination

I won't pretend to have as much knowledge about the NFL as some other posters here.... because I don't follow the sport as much as I do basketball. I will say this though.... Moss is one of the few players who was talented enough to make people who weren't interested in the sport take notice because of his ridiculous talent. His speed, height, and leaping ability put him in a class of his own.
Guy was the focal point of the 2 best offences in NFL history. That has to mean something.

Lawrence Taylor
Barry Sanders
Charles Woodson
Rod Woodson
Adrian Peterson
LaDanian Tomlinson
Also, Randy was a poverty blocking WR... If I'm drafting All Time I'm taking Jerry Rice and Larry Fitzgerald before him.
Randy could run fast, jump high and catch. He didn't have the best routes and he didn't block. One trick pony if there ever was one. Sheer athleticism he's close to Mike Vick in that regard but there are even more "gifted" players who never made it in the NFL for one reason or another (injuries, drugs, arrests, etc...)

This is pure BS, and anyone who knows football will attest to it. The "one trick pony" label thrown at Moss was pure media fabrication in an attempt to preserve Rice's status as the "all time best" when it became painfully obvious that Moss was more talented and doing things on the field that Rice could only dream of. They had to fabricate "faults" to his game to make him seem less impressive than he actually was. Randy Moss was a media "public enemy" all the way dating back to his HS years, and that story continued on throughout his NFL career. You think the media was going to let him "surpass" Jerry Rice, the guy everyone had dick-rode for a decade due to his work ethic and "good guy" personality off the field?
You can watch 8+ minutes of Moss doing nothing but blocking if you want:

Why would he need to focus on routes and blocking when that "one trick" was so completely devastating that no team could stop it?
I agree that he certainly wasn't the most complete WR or the hardest working.... but I honestly can't see how anyone could be more gifted. Guy was just a freak. Sanders (at the RB position) is a great comparison. Guys whose physical abilities just altered the game.

"Gifted" is really just a loaded term to simultaneously acknowledge his successes & knock his work ethic. Jerry Rice was also very gifted, but knowledgeable people would sooner attribute his success to his insane work ethic. Randy was so naturally good that, despite infamously admitting to "taking plays off" and being a purposeful locker room distraction at times, he was virtually unstoppable for the majority of his career... its not to say he didn't also work hard, but he obviously didn't maximize his opportunities the way a Jerry Rice did, who was consistently dominant for almost two decades.
I would think any 9ers homer/Jerry Rice fan would agree Moss was more naturally gifted. It only serves to highlight how much more focused and dedicated Jerry Rice was as a football player and builds his legend.

So you post a highlight reel of his blocking? As if I didn't watch the majority of his games his ENTIRE CAREER. He regularly took plays off, gave minimal effort blocking. Furthermore, there isn't even a debate on this topic regarding "Who is the BEST WR"... it's Jerry Rice by a landslide.
I'll concede the point he's the most "Gifted Wide Receiver" but that's not what the OP says. I think Vick, Lawrence Taylor, Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders were all more gifted at their respective positions... maybe AP also.
I'll agree with this.
