My intention is not to knock any specific companies as I have used products from some of these companies (JYM, Ergo, Carbon (which I have not used yet)) but I have found some companies "based on science" use artificial dyes instead of natural and I just never understood that. Anytime I see a PWO using beet root (AE, Kaged,SAN) for coloring or completely dye free (Controlled Labs) I appreciate it. I understand some of you will say that there is absolutely no harm in using these dyes (red 40, blue 1, yellow 5&6) but I guess I would prefer to do without. Anyone have any thoughts as to why more companies don't go the natural route?

Why do some of these "Science based" Supplement Companies use Artificial Dyes?

As you said, there is no harm associated with these dyes, therefore they add them. That said, I do prefer them to NOT be in there as well, I don't think they are necessary.
Companies know it influences some customers taste buds if their product mixes clear, so they include dyes. Hopefully all companies go away from that thinking eventually though.Last edited by ISurfNudeBrah; 10-08-2015 at 11:51 AM.

Psychological studies show colors influence both taste perception and appeal. That's why.

We certainly appreciate your input, but you are most definitely not representative of the majority. As Towerpage said, most people prefer the color of the mixed product to match their expectation with regard to the flavor.

Great thread OP.
I found myself growing more and more tired of the artificial colouring and lately I decided to stop purchasing any supps with artificial colouring. I absolutely do not buy that putting crap like that into my body is completely "harmless" in the long run and I feel it would be irresponsible (and stupid) for me to voluntarily ingest dyes when it is completely unnecessary. If I can get quality supps without dyes, I will choose those.
Shame, because I really wanted to try PES Alphamine Appletini. In fact, I'm sad to see companies like PES choosing to use dyes in their new stuff when they started without them. I guess it pays off for them.

Do you consume protein powder? I bet you most likely do and are totally ok with that. Guess what? These food dyes have been around for MUCH longer than those protein powders you're consuming. Logic would dictate that if anything, the artificial food dyes are far safer than protein powders based just on the fact that we have been ingesting them en mass for far longer than we have been buying and consuming protein powders.

To quote Layne on this from this exact question
For those asking about artificial sweeteners and colors, there is no evidence that consuming these in normal doses have negative health outcomes regardless of what anti-artificial zealots will try to convince you of. In fact, sucralose & aspartame have MORE safety data on them than stevia. Not saying stevia is bad at all, just making a point.

lol @ people saying there's zero harm. Is that why there's so many banned already, and many we use in the U.S. are banned almost globally? Must just be that other countries hate colors.
As far as using natural colors, you won't see it. Most, if not all, of them alter taste of the product.
also OP, Myokem powders are dye free

Don't care either way if there is or isn't dye, but I do hate when it makes my lips colored because that gets annoying.

Lol @ some places
We could go on for days over the stupidity of many regions/states and other countries with banned substances/foods/drinks/dyes etc etc
I mean if that is the basis for dyes/artificial ( so and so claimed but with 0 evidence to support ) colors-sweeteners we going to buy into the wifi allergy as well while were at it? which was debunked and I mean there still a large group claiming vaccines give autism.

Much like any technology. You cant really say they are all good or bad.
Thinking they are bad because they arent natural is foolish. Thinking they are all safe is also not necessarily smart.
Take them case by case. There are many that have decades worth of safety data.Controlled Labs Warder
