He might not actually be working alone. I remember reading this book about this sort of **** way back, and a tactic terrorists in hostage situations use is to plant a "sleeper" or two in the mix of the hostages, with knives and handguns hidden on them. Small concealable weapons, sometimes bombs.

This is just prevention/deterrence incase any of the hostages tries to play hero and take on the main assailant and disarm him.
