I've never seen him doing barbell squats.

I remember him saying that he messed up his hip squatting back in the 80's and stopped performing said exercise because of that, so...IDK.

I remember him saying that he stopped squatting because with the amount of weight he needed, his back would give out before his legs did, so it was ineffective for him.

Now that he doesn't need to go as heavy anymore, he's most likely fine with the idea of doing it again.

    Here's a quote by him: http://www.musculardevelopment.com/a...ian-yates.html

"In my gym, as in most gyms where serious bodybuilders trained at that time, you weren’t even considered a real man unless you squatted. So I did my best, but my body wasn’t structurally suited for squats. My hips were rather small for my frame, which was a liability when it came to heavy squats. I tore a muscle in my hip and underwent surgery. This was before I even turned pro.

I should also note that as hard as I did work on squats up to that point, my leg development was nothing really special. After my surgery, I never did a single set of squats again. I used Smith machine squats, the leg press, and the hack squat. I found that for me, those exercises did a much better job at working my quads, whereas squats had always involved a lot of lower back and glutes."
We're dodging more ninjitsu attacks than Flex Wheeler. We're ducking more bullets than George Farah. We're facing more death than a kid leg pressing at Branch Warren's gym.

You can't stop us. You can't hold us back.

    Thanks for sharing that information.

What I was referring to was in a video (that has been removed, re-uploaded and removed again), where he had a crowd around him in a gym, it was an active seminar.

Far be it from me to second guess a 6x Mr. O but how you perform a squat is what ultimately determines what body parts it emphasizes. High bar squats and front squats both shift the focus to the quadriceps. Any power lifter or Olympic lifter can tell you this, though it's basic exercise biomechanics. He's essentially creating a false dichotomy by suggesting that either you do squats one way; a way the shifts the emphasis to your glutes, hips and hamstrings or you perform another exercise such as hack squats to shift the focus to the quads. What he left out was performing the squat itself so that it focuses on the quads.
"I was laying in bed one night and I thought ‘I’ll just quit — to hell with it.’ And another little voice inside me said ‘Don’t quit — save that tiny little ember of spark.’ And never give them that spark because as long as you have that spark, you can start the greatest fire again.”

I didn't see him doing squats... I saw something that looked like a half squat (if that). And those leg press reps were almost 1/4 reps. Do you even Huh?

The leg press and hacks obviously worked well for him, I think his legs and back were slightly out of proportion to the rest of his body.
