What part about around Chicago Ave did you miss?
You obviously not aware...

14 hour layover next month in Chicago. Staying in airport (srs). Or might walk and take a look at lake Michigan and then walk back into airport.

I didn't ask what it has become, rather if this is how people in the US perceive it.
You guys are overreacting and most commenting from Chicago probably live in the burbs.
I grew up in the near west suburbs and went college and lived downtown for 6 years.
Yeah it can be a violent city and liberal policies are slowly ruining the best city in the country but use common sense and stay out of shady areas and 99% of the time you'll be fine.
I have a CCW in my current city (living out of state) but hoping to get a CCW for illinois too when I move back to Chicago in a year or two.

Let's try this again...I specifically said the intersection of Michigan & Chicago...
Northwestern is on Fairbanks East of Michigan Ave & Chicago Ave.... Chicago Ave just West of Michigan Ave right by the McDonalds has a Red Line stop....The Red Line stop is the problem right there...
Next time try a map.

What area are you going to op? Here's my step by step guide to traveling downtown (for work)
1) Stray away from sidewalks, use alley ways as you will not be seen and the muggers will have one less person on the sidewalks to think about hitting up
2) Dress extremely nice with a nice watch, they won't fk with anybody who has power due to the implications
3) Smoke expensive cigars while you are walking downtown, goes along with #2, you become invincible looking like a kingpin which their world pretty much revolves around.

Of course I was a tourist, and so is this guy. I was a tourist in the exact spot he's going to be going and I was completely fine. Nobody bothered me. I swear the misc is a bunch of closeted mouth breathing betas.

I've never been to Chicago but these tips help in any place in the world.
- Get insurance on really valuable items that you really need.
- Have some tool of protection hidden and concealed ready and easily available for use, examples: firearms, knifes, pepper spray, taser etc.
- Wear a money belt and put valuables like bank cards, credit cards, money, phone and id's in there so those won't get stolen when being pick pocketed. Keep the money belt hidden under your clothes(duh), don't wear it like a fanny pack over your clothes.
- Dress cheap, don't wear any *********, watches etc. Look ordinary and don't take any possessions with you unless you really need them.
- Have a few bucks on you in your pocket that you can give in case of a robbery while most of your money is in your money belt.
- If you have a backpack, put padlocks on the zippers so that the zippers cling together and the bag can't be easily be zipped open. Preferably padlocks with a number code instead of a key.
- Wear your backpack in front of you in crowded areas, you won't be able to see what someone does with your backpack if you wear it behind you.
- Never put your bag down when being somewhere like in a restaurant or café, ask if you can put it behind a counter or some safe place.
- Never have any valuables in plain sight in your car.**NO MA'AM CREW**

Wear a mask of George Zimmerman...you'll do fine. If you have any problems you can always drive through Gary and see me in South Bend, it's where all the hoodlums who can't afford Chicago live. Like f*cking bloody paradise up here, brosef.

this is true.
That area (river north, gold coast, near north side) is pretty safe and IMO the best area of Chicago.... but that specific intersection, in front of the McDonald's (and also the clark/division redline) stop is somewhere to just keep an eye out, mostly late at night when alone.Last edited by DTRrex; 07-14-2014 at 04:46 PM.

ITT: bunch of people who couldn't survive a day in the hood.
First of all don't bring a bunch of valuables with you. If you have to take a lot of cash put like 20 in your wallet, put the rest in the waistband of your boxers.
Keep your head on a swivel and be aware of your surroundings. Most of the time its painfully obvious when someone is trying to rob you. Especially if its kids. So if you feel like you're getting followed or something run to a well populated area.
If someone tries to rob you just stay calm, put your hands up, and agree with everything he says. Don't be a hero and end up with airholes in your shirt.
