Imagine every year 3000 African men came to your town and worked completely for free. All of those builders, brickies, laborers etc in your own town would be out of work in literally the only job options they have any training in.

They don't want unskilled 19 year old white women to come over and build them a fcking house that'll fall down in a couple of years, they want a 50-something architect to come over and teach them how. These people who raise funds to travel would be better off just paying an architects wages for a year instead - but that doesn't make for good photo opportunities now does it?

Not just volunteerism, but foreign aid is a hindrance to these countries in many ways. For instance, money is spent educating Africans as if education were the sole answer to their problems. But the educated youth then seek employment in government offices as those jobs are considered secure jobs for life. And yet all this does is place a larger burden on their countries economically. They need entrepreneurs not bureaucrats.

But my wife does have FB and there are probably a bunch of pics from her/our trips to Haiti donating time with a friends charity to help build shelters, provide medical treatment (meds to surgery), build clinics, etc. Been there a dozen times (before and after the earthquake) to help out people less fortunate than us.

Do you honestly believe that 10,000 or so western students are really affecting the 1,033 BILLION Africans in any way, negative or positive? The work they are doing over there is miniscule and they do it to experience things and feel good about themselves, no harm in that.
