So here's what we've got going on so far...
Food: pork ribs, leftover pork ribs, nathan's beef franks, generic 1/4# burgers, macaroni salad, potato salad 9edit: plus two varieties of cake )- everything over the top! Man, those ribs really make my tired afterward - like Thanksgiving turkey, must be loaded with tryptophan - but they're so good. It's the only time I really ingest a mass portion of pork products; when my father-in-law grills. I overloaded on Saturday, and then with leftovers on Sunday - I'm pretty sure I stayed in the caloric range of decency, but maybe not the mix of macros I would normally attain.
Tonight looks to be Joe's Crab Shack in 'Fort Liquordale' [for 3 anniversaries, ours (8/24), brother-in-law (8/26), parents-in-law (8/29)]. One local critic gave it a so-so and the other location (Joe's Seafood Shack) a not too good. There are plenty of excellent restaurants with consistently great reviews closer in Palm Beach, but I leave the choice to my in-laws and wife. Legal would be closer and better-rated in Boca. So, it looks like tonight I might be getting more food groups I try to limit my intake of - shellfish. But now I'm just droning on.
Leftovers are almost gone. Breakfast was my Zeal for Life whole foods drink, followed by a cup of coffee, and a single serving of Zeal protein with almond milk an hour later. I just had meal two with my wife: 1/2 a banana (they got ha-yuu-je bananas), one puto, and two hot dogs (no bun - just a little ketchup and more mustard), manageable I guess.
My Jack LaLane sessions
Saturday: 2 sets of 100 bodyweight squats ('jailhouse' or 'prison' with arms behind my head ) -
Sunday: 3 sets of 30 upside down shoulder presses (I don't even know what to call them. knees at the edge of the bed, hang upside down, almost a pushup. had to stop at 30 because I got light-headed, and I felt it in my delts pretty nicely)
Monday: so far - 2 sets of 25 full reps bodyweight lunges (arms behind head) - I'll attempt 2 more sets, 25 per side, at least.
You'd think doing an exercise without added weight would have no effect. Yesterday afternoon and somewhat this morning my quads (especially lower) have some soreness.
Thus far, product wise, I'm in love with the way I feel waking up. I'm getting up pretty refreshed, not wanting to slap the snooze over and over. That really helps as most of my workouts are fasted, in the morning, as I'm getting ready for work; so getting going right is a major thing for me and helps me not take shortcuts on my exermasizing.
Note: when we get back to NC, the whole family is going for the 90 day Zeal for Life Challenge. It's more like a lifestyle challenge. Getting everyone involved is a big deal as my wife will be more supportive of what I do if I can get her doing it with me.
@Obey - yeah, she's half. My mother-in-law is full. My wife was born there and spent over half her childhood there. Filipinos are notorious for high salt, blood pressure, diabetes. It's born into the food they "have" to make.
@Sarah - she's 18, but not at all ready to leave home. That's partly because of my wife and me. We do everything with our kids and family time is a big deal. My daughter had a job with her sister for a short time before she was 18, then got a small part-time job before she graduated. We want to her to have everything in order before she tries to do it on her own. Just a parent's neurotically overprotective tendencies; but she's a good kid and respects us, so she doesn't pull the '18' card on us. She saw that from her sisters and they've had it tough and still are.

Exactly. She saw some people who were on the company's 90 day challenge, and their posts on ********. One guy has taken the 'challenge' repeatedly since they rolled it out a year and a half ago is posting activities that seem like no big deal to him (vacationing, doing 30mins weights in the morning is his 'workout' then running on the beach, etc are just fun activities). He's incorporated it into his lifestyle. She wants that - not to have to think about it but make it a lifestyle. She also told me about one of the guys who is posting that he just started it for the first time, how it sounded like a major effort - he found a personal trainer, getting things set up, all this 'work'. She doesn't want that to be her lifestyle. I'm glad she pointed out both, because it gave me a perfect opportunity to explain to her that the first guy who makes it sound easy used to be the second guy. I reminded her that when we saw his notes on the first 90 days he ever did, that he was more like the second guy - it was a big deal, an effort; it took work to break/make a habit. I think she gets it now. You can't just declare that you want something and it falls in your lap, and until you build the repeat behavior it takes extra effort. Lifestyle is the result of the struggle that you maintain and it gets easier as you go. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, and I still struggle because I want and I get pulled back. Ultimately, she is commandeering the ship, and I am there to support her. In so doing, she feels better about herself and I get to do what I like as well.
The overall picture here is that she busts my chops because I'll go get it done, with or without her. I don't wait. She wants to get back into fitness and being hot like she was as a teenager (I think she has it in her to be hotter than she was at 16) but needs me to pull her up and to do it her way. She had some success a few years ago, but has slid back. I may not progress as well or as fast as I'd like because we're not all doing it. Hint: you do not tell your wife you're not eating what she's cooking because it's not in your meal plan. Whatever she cooks is in your meal plan. She even admitted last night that if I helped her get to her goal, why would she complain about mine, right?
Let's see what happens tonight. If it's just playing a wii game (dance something), doing a DVD (zumba, hip-hop abs - yeah we bought the TV ads), biking, going to the cave - whatever - I'll be happy for some activity. Then I'll get to gauge working my beloved lifting in there at the best time. I just need to make it fun for her; if it's a chore - SNAP! right back to the beginning. She runs hot or cold, and I'd have to beg, plead, and work on it all over again. Need some prayer here.
No call, but i did sleep in this morning - 8:30a.m. She really wants me to not wake up early. We'll also see how the family involvement will go.
So far, my wife is having a great day. She was fixing some brunch, looking forward to some healthy eating.

Dinner last night - spam, fried eggs, papaya pancakes; we still have some work to do. But, my kids cooked. Workout last night - nada. I'm giving my wife some room to ease into it.
It's official! the trip to Florida was a 'vacation'. I weighed in yesterday at 192#; 5# heavier than when I left. Fortunately, today, it settled back down to 189.4# - probable salt intake and water retention.
I did a few sets of seated barbell shoulder press - time was crunched as I had to get my daughter to school for her student gov't deal.
Seated Shoulder Press

115# x 11
115# x 11

I still ate like garbage all weekend. It was my anniversary, after all. I'm waiting to see what my wife is thinking by tomorrow. This morning we had to wake up and get to an appointment on top of me waking up early, taking my daughter to her bus stop, waiting at said bus stop for 25 minutes, then taking her 20 minutes to school, 10 minutes or so in line, and 20 minutes back (feeling draggy right about now), so no time for anything resembling exercise. That was a real cramp in my style. On top of that, I had to dress like an adult today for this "appointment!"
Things I learned this weekend: (some I've known, but are still little pearls of experienced wisdom)- Yes, eating a triple Oktoberfest burger at Steak n' Shake [plus a root beer float] just before loading up at BJ's helps reduce the number of snack foods boxes in the cart. $20 for 2 people, versus $50 - $80 of useless garbage.
- Sorry Carrabba's, the romança is over. $133 for four (my wife and I do our anniversary with our kids); slow service [I think our waiter even was lounging outside at one point], I remember veal dishes being much better years ago [tasteless and sloppy], and the dessert was - meh - but overportioned and thus, overpriced. The dinner overall was just way overpriced for a little meat and alotta pasta. The best thing was the calamari, but even the dipping sauce could have been vastly improved.
- I need to learn to cook something healthier. If my wife does not want to cook (á la last night), she tells me we're having chimichangas. We were at the grocery store, so there was no getting out of it. I take the premade beef & bean chimis [grade 'b' beef? at best] and microwave them half way, finish them in a skillet with canola oil, then pour on some taco sauce, shredded cheese (at least the cheese professed to be healthier Weight Watchers lowfat) - melt, and sour cream (she's having none of the fat free stuff). I put a little chipotle tabasco on mine last night. Late night magic!
- going to bed after 2 am does not help wake up refreshed at 5:30 am
I'm asking for a do over tonight. Bed by midnight. My wife was talking about a new schedule for herself, including me. I'll wake up early, she can't; yet, she realizes that if she wants to get on the fitness track, her best opportunity to bust a move is to exercise in the morning, else she gets to busy with the home business and life in general, and never gets around to it.

Oh man just one of those days wasn't it. Cooking healthier is fairly easy and it doesn't taste bad at all. Hell if you can bake or grill you're halfway there. There's pretty good marinades out there. Today I made some chicken enchiladas with healthier ingredients. It just takes some practice and some knowing how to prepare food other than deep frying.

Second grill and bake things. I have some recipe options I give customers of mine if you're interested message me. I'll copy and paste what I have
Start with simple foods. That's the way to go. You can do it. And yes some dining out sucks!Sarah- NASM CPT

Yeah, the variety is the hard part for us - we stock up on some basics; but my wife says that she looks around and sees the same thing over and over and wants none of it. Since she grew up on Filipino food, she can gravitate to that pretty easily. She knows that people create healthier alternatives, we just don't go find them, and then we also stick to the same old things - chicken or tilapia - same spices - yada yada. Even eggs - omelet for her: 1 whole + 3 whites - low fat colby jack. I'd like to grab a healthy cook book, or scope out some recipes on the wondernet; but the Filipina kicks in and 'we don't need any recipes!' We buy a marinade to try and then she dresses it up with the same spices, plus some oil, etc. and soak it for 3-5 days. Every marinade tastes the same
I get a little lazy to grill all the time, but I can bake meat, and usually do. I can live off the same things over and over, although I like to mix it up a little from time to time. I need that enchilada recipe. I found this mole negro sauce and it's like a recent fave of mine for lunch.
recipe: 360g frozen chicken; cumin, chili powder, pepper, cayenne; cook at 375 for 45 minutes; drain the liquid (mostly water and fat, result ~265g chicken); top with a slice of chipotle white cheddar cheese (split one slice to cover multiple pieces) and top with 1/4c mole sauce; finish off for 5 mins @ 375; spoon the sauce that runs off back on top. -- NOM NOM NOM. Another fave is pan seared ahi tuna; man, I love that, too.
Sawa - you're absolutely right. My wife and I talked; she mentioned that if I wake up and nudge her to join then she doesn't it's on her. BUT, waking up at 6:30 is a no go. She wants me to sleep in a little more. I'll get her to come over to my side soon. You really can't beat starting your day with a good workout - the pump - the sweat - oh yeah. We're going to have to get to bead earlier tonight so that we have a prayer of making it to 'the cave'.

Today:
I couldn't get my arse outta bed until 8am, but after I was up from 6 - 6:30 to take my daughter to the bus. Like you Sawa, I need to get accustomed to waking up at 6 and staying up - get the full workout in and feel great.
Just a Quickie, aka: "A little sumpthin' is betta than nuthin'"
Barbell Squats
warmup 45# x 15 -> 135# x 12
205# x 12
225# x 10 x 3 sets
I don't think I went quite as low as my PR not long ago of 225# x 6 reps, but it was still down to the bench height.
DB Upright Rows / Standing Calf Raises
I left the 225# on the bar (maybe out of laziness or convenience)
50# x 10 / 225# x 20
50# x 12 / 225# x 20
50# x 12 / 225# x 20
The goal was to get some work in while prepping my food, etc. Mini-mission accomplished. Not a full workout by any means, but I'm in between doing it all on my own and waiting for my wife to join in. MOAR SETS TOMORROW!!!
