That is a really good point. Liability is always an issue for us. I would assume that the patient would be required to sign something equivalent to a refusal in order to release liability from the medic, but I dunno.
I definitely wouldn't want that job either, but somebody will.

Any so-Cal EMS ITT (or have some insight/advice on the region). Planning to take the NREMT in a couple of weeks (made about 500+ flashcards already). I know it can take months on end to get hired somewhere so trying to be realistic and research my options more (i.e. at emtlife forums etc.)
Also, to expand on my earlier question about no one usually "retiring as an EMT," is the common/conventional route to meet the minimum requirements and apply for paramedic school/fire academy asap? I've been reading that this seems to be the case, but I figured it would be more practical to put in a couple years (maybe 3-5?) as an EMT to have a solid foundation on patient care, etc. Thanks brahs.misc lurker of peace

Once you get your few pre connects and some other little things figured out, make yourself a cheat sheet.
Because once you got those few things down, you ain't really gonna use it any more. Just math out the friction loss per section of hose and then you can just do a quick math quiz in your head if you have to throw together a weird combo.Leo/Military Supporter. Bustin my ass to save yours!!!!!!

If you would like to eventually work for a fire department, then yes, I wouldn't delay a fire academy/medic school for too long. If you plan on saying in Cali that is definitely the right move. As im sure you know, the Cali job market sucks. I don't mean to sound harsh but you might want to consider relocating if you want to be a firefighter. Im not saying its impossible to get hired there, its just extremely difficult...especially if you aren't a medic.

Spending my birthday as my back half to a 48. Wish I didn't mention it was my birthday though, since I'm an intern I figured it wouldn't matter, but some of the guys are currently baking me a cake and I've already been hit with the booster line.

Question for the medics in this thread. How old were you when you started medic school, and how long had you been involved in EMS? Do you feel you would have benefitted from more experience before beginning medic school? Favorite and least favorite part of medic school? Any responses are greatly appreciated.

I'm currently only a medic intern and started medic school at 23. Came in with no 911 experience. I can tell you from first hand experience it is VERY difficult. Not having a basic understanding on how to simply act on scene as an EMT, and pretty much learning how to be an EMT and Paramedic all within my Paramedic internship is extremely difficult and stressful. I would recommend you be an EMT for a short while before Medic school, that's just my opinion though

I was 28 when I started medic school.
I had no prior EMS experience.
Yes I definitely would have benefitted from some field experience as an EMT before I started medic school, but I don't have any regrets about jumping into the medic program. Jobs for EMT-Bs are tough to come by here, and I had zero interest in working for a private transport company. I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to make a career out of EMS. The logical next step was medic school. It definitely made for a steep learning curve but it was worth it.
Favorite part of medic school was my internship. Being able to actually get out into the field and start putting it all together was fun. In terms of classroom stuff, I really enjoyed cardiology and pathophysiology.
Least favorite part was my hospital rotations. At first it was ok because I was seeing all kinds of disease process' that I had only read about, but it got boring after awhile. I often felt like I was bugging people who were just trying to rest in their bed. I understand why so many hours in the hospital setting are required, but it just got old.

Interested in becoming an paramedic/firefighter and I have one lazy eye which is 20/200 vision and another eye which is corrected to 20/20 would this disqualify me from having a career as one? I've searched around google but seemed to get split answers and was curious if anyone has experience with this type of problem.

Well bro i just got the best call of my life. The dept I had been waiting for is going to hire me! Just have to get the blessing from their board of selectmen! They'll send me to AEMT school and possibly medic school after I get through with that. My career goal is to eventually be a firefighter in my dad's fire department. But this is an awesome start. An absolute dream come true. Gonna work my ass off and train as much as I can to be the best firefighter as I can be.
