Last time I thought I was getting a good deal, I just got lol'z here. I paid $74 for 10lbs. I thought it was a decent price.
Just talked to a friend who gets his protein from Sam's ~$35 for 5lbs. ON is my favorite but honestly $53 for 5lbs is more than I want to spend.

actually thought about this... maybe some chicken or turkey jerky to just have on the desk. obviously would still need pre and post protein, but for general protein consumption might be a good idea. whole food > supps...
saw some unflavored on amazon for a decent price. the benefit I see here is that it could go with any drink. doesn't have to be chocalate or vanilla. could be gatorade or the likes... even during workout nutrition.

not a good idea to have a faster digesting protein post workout? broscience?
also preworkout, chicken breast and brocolli work great for me but anything else tends to sit in my stomach for too long. prefer faster digesting protein pre.
am I really that far off??? multi-billion dollar industry and I guess I'm the only one who drinks protein pre and post workout.

well dam fellas. so why whey protein at all then? convenience? easier to slam 50 grams of protein in a shake vs 8oz of chicken breast? what do you say about the magic 30-60 minute window of opportunity after a workout? you just eat a full meal post workout? I usually have 1 scoop of protein followed by a full meal approx 1 hour later.

$74 for 10 lbs isn't bad at all. Its all about the quality level you're looking for. I would eat a cardboard box with peanut butter before I would use the protein your friend got. It's always a good idea, if you can, to buy in bigger increments. Also, more important than the price per pound, is the price per serving.

Convenience mainly. I use them as a breakfast shake for ease (and mostly because I don't feel like eating chicken in the AM). The window of opportunity post workout is open for ~24 hours. I usually eat a meal since there's ~4h of a gap between my last meal and heading into the gym.
Better off with a whole meal.

Phase 8 here on bb.com is $30 for 4 lbs right now... its also getting a ton of great feedback, like this or this or even this.
point being protein powder can be had at under $8 per lb pretty easily... so read reviews and find one that fits your macros and has great feedback, cheapest price isn't always your best option so reading others feedback will help.

No supplement company makes their own protein, most get them from the same whey makers. What you pay for is flavor/brand.
And if you really wanna get down to what's important, price per gram of protein, some proteins have larger serving sizes than others so it doesn't tell the whole story.Last edited by Fbeckenbauer; 03-12-2013 at 08:52 AM.

Even if we put the idea of IF aside for a moment.
I don't think anyone is saying within a couple of hours. Hell, you'd be hungry by then. What we're talking about is "anabolic window" bullchit of taking in a "fast absorbing protein shake" within 30 mins to an hour. Eating within a couple of hours is a different animal altogether.

I'm a bit cheap so I tend to look for sales and deals as I go. For the pure stuff like ON's, I pay around $45-50 per 5 lbs. Dymatize goes on sale quite often so I tend to stock up on that as well.
Last week I bought 10lbs of Syntha-6 for $63 shipped which was an absolute steal in my opinion.Born in Lithuania | Living in Chicago |

I agree with this as well. I honestly do.
I think proper nutrients (being consumed) shortly after a workout is ideal. Not saying I completely believe in the 'golden hour' or anything, but at the same time I think some people are getting a bit carried away with the "timing doesn't matter at all" thing when it does. I think you need to keep your metabolism going, you need to fuel your body and the best way to do that is with a shake or whole food sometime within that 2 hour window of finishing a workout.

The data's pretty clear that there is some slight benefit to post workout administration of CHO/PRO up to 3h post exercise. I would think that there are very few people who enjoy working out in a completely fasted state, then existing in the same state for any more than 3h post resistance training, so the large majority is likely ingesting said nutrients within that time frame regardless.
The generalization of nutrient timing not mattering is more used as a form to deter novice lifters from worrying about micromanaging EAA/BCAA/PRO/CHO timing so early on. Falls under the same category of ~1g/lbs LBM protein consumption, at least in my mind.
I don't have the time to go through and research the statistics (nor likely the permissions to view all full articles), but would be interested to see the sway of CV's from group to group pertaining to changes in LBM.

With regards to consistency, Isn't it much easier for the casual resistance trainee to get into the habit of mixing a protein shake and eating a banana immediately after their workout, than it is to say 'hey **** that logic just eat some food' and then by the time they drive home, argue with their wife, their kids want something, or they have somewhere else to be....etc it's hours later before they get a balanced meal.
Does the 'oh screw nutrient timing, just supplement with chicken and steak when you get home hurdur' argument that gets spammed around here really hold water? Can you honestly say that the protein consumed there is not just equivalent to but significantly superior to just taking a shake and some carbs after you workout?
I don't think you can.
As for intermittent fasting, that is a highly specific protocol and it's a logical fallacy to jump from 'but what about IF!!!' to 'nutrient timing is bullchit'
