Sometimes in life you gotta take the hits and this is one of them. I say you just work the week and get that great letter of rec. because it can really help you in the future. You don't want to ruin your future resumes because of this idiot. Goodluck brah.

Both of my older brothers are software engineers. They are MAJORLY pissed off about this and each said, "How can they expect you to work 3 more days and even give one damn about it?"
They both say they would not do it.

I know myself. Once my motivation is gone, I am worthless. I may stay the three days and do some work. I will not deliberately break anything, but I also will not care if my work is good or not.

This. As chitty as it's gonna feel, do NOT let your pride get in the way of extra money you'll need after you're actually separated from this company. The smarter thing to do would be to START LOOKING ASAP... you already got the recommendation. Don't make a chitty situation even more chitty if you know what I mean...

I was fired from my SE job in July for essentially the same reason; I was the new guy and they didn't feel after 11 months that I was as far along as they liked. The strange part was (1) they told me right off the bat that it would take a year to get up to speed yet I was fired after 11 months, (2) I only spent the last month or two actually coding as I was doing grunt work the previous ten, (3) they would give me sections of code to work on yet wouldn't spend 15 minutes explaining the existing code, and (4) at the time of my firing, their workload had increased so much that the SEs weren't allowed to talk to each other about projects (if anyone explained the code to me then they would fall behind their own projects).

My advice is to train the new guy. I quit my 12 hour a week part-time job because the politics of the organization were so screwed up, and when I explained it to a recruiter he said that other HRs would think I wasn't a "team player". So just suck it up for a few days, train the new guy, and start putting out your resume.

    Sucks OP.

A mate of mine was in a similar situation. Employed by a company straight out of TAFE (college) for a drafting job (engineering drawings on CAD). He had only done a beginner course and they knew it. He had studied electrical and they put him in a different department despite telling him he would be in electrical. He worked his ass off to learn and get up to speed. His boss would belittle him telling him he was a slow learner and he wasn't getting it quick enough. He felt like he would be fired any day so he quit.

I wish I was in that situation. Was laid off for 7 months from Jan 2011 to Aug 2011 and currently will be fired five months ago on the 5th.

Figured graduating with a 3.3 GPA in SE would get me loads of offers. Nope. I'm in full "take any coding job I can get now" mode.

ive had this happen before bro

they may have been planning on firing you all along, if its a small company they dont want to risk having to pay unemployment if you stay longer than 3 months.. if they told you they were going to fire you, you wouldn't work as hard.. so they lead you on by telling you to speed up and that they are thinking about giving you a raise.. or that there will be an opportunity for a promotion coming up. then boom protein everywhere

fuark. i'm a microbiology graduate and i can barely get an interview in the industry

i hear stories about people being let go after 6 months just so the companies dont have to pay benefits or give raises. then they just bring in someone new for another probation period

and the qualifications? easy techniques to train, but they want people with 2 years experience willing to do it for $12 an hour

Just make the best that you can out of this situation. Do the last week, and get the good recommendation letter. That way you can use this situation to help you open more (hopefully better) doors in the future. Leave on good terms with your boss. The corporate world is very cutthroat; use this next week as an experience in showing integrity and maturity by not being bitter. I know it sounds lame but look at this next week as a way of honing your professional character while getting paid and having a stellar recommendation written for you at the end. Just try and see the positives of the situation.

Don't do this. I know this is not what you want to hear but use this time to work on your attitude. This situation sucks but learning to control your emotions in a career-related situation like this will help you in spades. You may not see the point of it now, but if you regularly practice handling situations like this, you will make yourself more psychologically prepared for any other similar or worse situations in the future. Every circumstance like this is a chance to improve character and further develop your professional stress-handling abilities.

No problem there. I have pretty much already moved on. Although I am pissed at what happened, they really set me free by firing me. This was not a good place for me. They were going to work me to death and not appreciate anything that I did. Crappy. I don't need it. Now I am free of it and I feel good. I am going to go do a lot of skiing next week.
I already put my updated resume out there.

I will go in tomorrow to see what happens, but it's pretty much over. I cannot work for them anymore and I certainly and not going to be a chump for the new guy. I will stand up for myself.

Uh, I really don't understand why.

If anything, I'll wager that she has bitched at him big time for doing this. She was very excited that he hired as, as was much of the family.

A friend of mine today addressed that said, "Who is stupid idiot there who thinks it would be a good idea to let a fired employee work for three more days?"

Don't believe the good recommendation letter part.

Full of chit. Boss probably can't wait to write a letter detailing what he think you did wrong.

Sorry to hear this OP. Bosses always expect the most work for the least amount of money. They can be unrealistic. For what it's worth have a happy new year and may it be better than your 2012 "year-end."
    Das not it mayne.

Sorry to hear OP. Sounds really chitty. I mean if you need the $ and the company is reputable. I would work the week and get the letter. Wouldn't tell the new guy anything. You're not his teacher. Just aware him on what JUST happened to you.
I have CF(genetic disease) hence my super small size.

If a company doesn't like the work output of an employee, they have every right to let that person go. Maybe from your point of view you were doing well, but they didn't agree. Simple as that. If I owned a company and felt like I had an employee that was not up to par, I would not continue paying them. I would let them go and find someone who could handle it.

Take the week of work and the letter with a smile and a handshake and move on with your life. No sense making this a bigger deal than it has to be. If you don't, good luck explaining in your next interview why you were fired after three months and see if your "I was working plenty hard" argument sticks.

the way i see it, he's already gonna get shunned by your family for doing this to you. if you work the next 3 days and never get your letter of recommendation, your family will really hate him.

or if you decide to not give a chit, he'll use this as an excuse why he/his boss couldnt give a good letter of recommendation, but i honestly think you're not gonna get one anyway. i've had the same thing happen to me. boss was mad at me that i told him i couldn't work for him, he refused to be a referral even though i was working for $10/hr at 18 (in aus mayn, where a big mac costs $7 alone and min wage at my age is around $19), would stay back for work numerous times to help clean up/help new employees (i was a bartender) and wouldn't complain if my paycheck was short (which it usually was by about $10-30). also add the fact that some weeks i wouldn't get payed on time because he was "busy"

i also never complained that i worked every Friday, saturday and sunday from 6pm-1am which was total bullchit. don't trust them, they only care how good they look and how much profit they can make
