I was at the LA by my house last Friday, and while I was doing squats, this guy comes over and tells me that the lifting belt I've been using isn't giving me enough support. I have this Gold's Gym lifting belt (I believe around 2.5") that I've been using for a few years since I started lifting in high school, and after doing up some research, found that I should be using something of a higher standard. He was cool enough to let me use his powerlifting belt on my last heavy sets of squats and the support it gave me was just awesome. I never asked him what brand it was, but it looked anywhere between 4-5 inches by my eye. I'm not familiar with belts specs, so forgive me for my ignorance.
What powerlifting belts should I be looking into?

Quality powerlifting belts will typically run 4" wide all the way around, and will be either 10 or 13mm thick. A few brands popular around here are Cardillo, Inzer, and I think the other is bestbelts.com or something like that (someone correct me if thats wrong).

IPF specs are no more than 4" tall and no more than 13mm thick, that belt is 4" tall and 7.5mm thick, so yes. I would get a better belt If you plan on competing, though- at least 10mm thick, and preferably the full 13mm. Look at the belt sticky for recommended brands.

It would definitely be worth it to invest a little more if you plan on competing. Around $100 will get you an awesome belt but be prepared to wait a couple weeks in most cases. If you really must go for a lower price point liftinglarge.com has some pretty solid belts at the 50-60 range and you will get it quick if it's in stock

I'm a big Inzer fan. I have a Forever Buckle (two prong) 10mm and a Forever Lever 13mm. I've had the 10mm since, hell, 2008 or 2009, and the 13mm for at least a few years...not really sure how long. Would buy again in a heartbeat.
But if this is your first real belt I would get a 10mm. The 13mm belt is quite sturdy and probably not what I would recommend a female buy right off the bat.
When I squat 405 for the first time back in 2010 it was with that 10mm Inzer. (too bad I can't do that right now lol )
