They aren't super popular in the US, but I loved my CZ-75 9mm
Don't think I ever had a jam in several thousand rounds at the range.480s / 370b / 495d / 235 x 2 SOHP

I've had several different pistols over the years between .45, .40S&W and 9mm but the pistol I have now for regular range time and home defense is a S&W M&P 9mm fullsize and a M&P Shield 9mm for carry. Great ergonomics and very good quality build. I upgraded my fullsize with the Apex sear and their striker block and the trigger feels amazing now, better than their Pro model.
I prefer 9mm because they have higher capacity than .40 or .45 and will end someone just as well. Recoil of 9mm and .45 are about the same for me but .40 just feels too snappy and not as easy to get back on target quickly as the other two.

SIG Sauer p320... gonna be the goat gun soon... amazing piece... has a modular system and you can change frame sizes and such.. the "gun" itself is the firing assembly, which is removable... got amazing reviews
comes in full size, carry size, compact size, and sub compact... I have sc and love it... dead accurate with it...

Glock 23 gen 4 with the Lone Wolf conversion chamber so you can choose to shoot .40 cals or 9mm.
Sigs are badass IMO, but it's hella expensive. A decent one is going to run you at least $700-800.
A lot of people are bashing on Glocks for the looks, it's not the most aesthetic, but I think it looks pretty damn cool. Also, you can customize it in ways you just can't with other handguns. Extended mags, grips, barrels, and a chit ton more.

Sig P320 you can find for $550.
I know a LEO who shot his G22 for 4 yrs on a weekly bases and put thousands of rounds through it without cleaning it over 4 yrs and never had an issue with it. The are built to last. My only gripe is the factory sights but those are easily replaced.Official Supp. Misc Beer Crew

was looking at this for a 2nd gun 'for my wife' - a striker that feels like a real pistol, polymer + the great reviews are tempting, nice pair with my mk25 to keep in the kitchen in case feral youth decide to come carol singing + take some xmas presents
I still think OP should get a pre-owned P226 as a first gun
