Uh are you talking to me? I said US grunts in 'Nam would have been more effective had the senior officers listened to the boots on the ground instead of the latte sipping folks on fire support bases.
As for '****ing a country back into the stone age', the taliban and other insurgent groups are still extremely difficult for US, and any western army, to deal with. These groups are aware they can't win a conventional war so they claw at armies for years until the population back home can no longer stomach relatively low casualty rates.
