My family is starting to become vegan, and with that a lot of diet changing is happening. I have been bugging my parents about ensuring there's enough protein in every meal, particularly soy.
I was wondering if there are any guy out there who have been on a vegan diet and made some serious gains, as it's hard to find some great motivation.
Right now, I'm about 164lbs, probably 13% BF, at 5'11 at 17 yo. I'm worried that by switching to become vegan, I'll also depreive my body of protein, disallowing myself to reach my full height potential. I work out 5 times a week, but during the winter/spring months I do barely any cardio. I'm reading that the more exercise your body does, the more you will grow, and so I'm wondering if on the weekends I should add in some cardio, or low intensity workouts to help my body rest. During the summer/fall I play soccer, and I'm worried I'm going to lose my gains through all the really intense running in that, at the same time I'm not expecting to be huge, just strong and with decent size.

A vegetarian diet is easy to get hold of protein.
Vegan not so much, heck vegan is actually bad for you, they barely get any nutrients. Dont ever become vegan in my words, vegetarian is fine though.
I'm not a vegetarian but mum is, try this for a protein lunch for example. 1.5 cups cooked Quinoa (keen-wah) add chickpeas, asparagus, spinach. Sneak yourself a tin of tunaand just mix that in for a bit extra. The Quinoa itself has a higher protein content than brown rice so its quite good for you and well so do chickpeas. Taste is pretty good.

OP its not just protein, don't forget that vegan cuisine is lacking in calories, and that bulking on it will involve you stuffing yourself to the point of nausea. Also, I'm pretty sure you'll miss out on fat. Fat is really important IMO, I remember trying to cut off my fat intake almost completely (I was an idiot) and I got really sick/depressed. Your body needs fat. T-levels are affected by fat intake as well.

Dont become vegan IMO, because just as above posters said you'll lack in micronutrients and macros that will affect not just your bodycomposition, you will also feel depressed, etc. i know because i used to be vegan(well with an ED also, so that didnt help so much) and i suffered a lot of consecuences.

Vegetarianism = still very very possible to hit protein requirements and to have a good BB diet, though a bit harder than the meat-eater. whey, cottage cheese, eggs, milk blah blah blah
Vegan = just give up right now.
I always ask vegans how they get their protein and every one of them starts going off about beans. Beans = not a very significant source of proteinBench Press - 225x18 // 275x8 // 330x1
Squat - 385x7 // 445x1
Overhead Press - 135x20 // 225x1
Deadlift - 385x11

Thanks for all your replies guys.
However, this has become more of an ethical decision, than nutritional one. In light of seeing videos of how animals are treated in factory farms, etc, I cannot further support the industry, I love animals. Call me soft, whatever, watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-o-luz-UfQ
Secondly, eating vegan is completely healthy, I mean for christ sake you're eating vegetables, nuts, beans and wheats. Based on major epidimiological studies such as "The China Study," animal protein really isn't that great for you (due to casein mostly).
I know it will be harder to find protein on a vegan diet, but I believe it is possible. Soy is a complete protein, and based on this http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20378106 using it as a main protein source is no problem. As well as using beans, and nuts.
There are barely any really ripped, huge vegan BB's out there, I realize that, but I want to believe that's just because veganism is so small right now.
