These days it's common to hear of a pro tearing this muscle or that or some other athletic injury. One thing I've never heard about was Arnold--or Columbu, Zane, etc--injuring themselves. I know Arnold had a knee surgery after a posing platform collapsed, yet no other reports of injuries from those days.
Did pros of the 70s not get injured because they stuck with safe weights and controlled movements or were they just never reported or diagnosed?

Arnold Injuries?

Arnold said once that he tore a pectoral muscle. I can't see any signs of damage on his chest so maybe it was just a few fibres.

main problem with many people i noticed is that they think cardio is for burning fat... which is NOT TRUE
CARDIO-VASCULAR training as name implies is training for CARDIO (HEART) and VASCULAR (BLOOD VESELS,veins, capilars etc)
cardio vascular training is probably most important thing you can do, because it helps you not only live healthier but also you can reach your goals faster because better blood flow = more nutrients delivered to all parts of your body (including muscle)Last edited by Delirium1337; 08-21-2011 at 02:22 PM.

If the Weider magazines are to be believed, Arnold did pyramid sets and usually only the last was his all-out max for about six reps on certain exercises. Maybe they weren't injured as often because back then pros didn't try to go all-out, balls-to-the-wall with forced and cheat reps, negatives, etc?

Holy crap there are some absolutely stupid posts in this thread.
Arnold and co trained with insane volume with decent weight.
Their form was fine. Just the fact that they trained decades ago doesn't mean their form was incorrect or they didn't have as good a grasp on biomechanics, rofl! (god that was stupid, some people, jesus)Novice Athletic Tall winner and Overall Athletic winner

If you read the book Pumping Iron, Charles Gaines at one point says that Arnold's form was perfect always. He even says that this is the reason why Arnold was #1, because he never cheated a rep and his form was pure, and nobody came close to him in that department.
aw, here is the exact quote: "They do five sets of twelve reps, hurting - Arnold more than the other two, because he does the exercise with greater purity.
ONe reason why Schwarzenegger is the best bodybuilder alive is that he never cheats an exercise. he makes every movement full and clean without jerking or pausing and without borrowing from muscles other than the one he is working. Another reason is that he concentrates so well."

What is the deal with people thinking Arnold and Franco didn't cheat, or train all-out? Of course they did. Watch some videos of each of them slapping around huge amounts of weight.
Arnold wrote about how he'd "cheat" only to make an exercise harder, or to squeeze the out the last few repetitions that couldn't be performed with strict form.
All of these "Weider" training principles were nothing more than catchy names attached to what bodybuilders were doing already.
I think it's true that volume was king in the '70s, though. Arnold wrote in Education how he was forced to devise a very high volume training regimen when he was in the Austrian Army after winning the Junior Europe and being ordered to train. Of course, Arnold's stories always have to be taken with a grain of salt.

Arnold injured his shoulder before the 1980 Mr. Olympia.
He got a cortisone shot to continure training for it. It messed up his water levels because a side-effect of the cortisone is water retention. He drank a lot of water before the show and became puffy. Franco made him pose for hours the day before the competition to help drain the water.
