In the nutrition forum, people are saying you should be around 10% over your maintenance. Which is like 300 cals for me but I also see threads on there that say 500 cals is optimum. Any advice if your doing a strength routine>?

3500 calories is approximately one pound of FAT, not muscle. This number is a poor metric to use for a bulk. Muscle contains roughly half the calories of fat (if I remember correctly, this is off the top of my head).
Most importantly, if you look into the articles about maximum rate of muscle gain (example: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/mus...potential.html), it's rare that someone can legitimately gain more than 2-3 pounds in a month, meaning you adjust calories such that you try to gain about .5-1 lbs/week.
