Just got a text. My niece is in the hospital with a sudden pulmonary disease. She's on a ventilator and has been approved for a lung transplant. It's not certain she will get one in time. I am short on other details because it's 2am.

The reason this feels surreal?

In the last two years, two of my siblings died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. My brother had a lung transplant and still died. My sister opted against the lung transplant after witnessing that.

So now there are three immediate family members who might be dying of the same obscure disease within a two year period, despite the fact it's not supposed to be hereditary.

Since 2021:

Dad: died of stroke
Mom: died of stroke complications after covid vax
Sister: died of pulmonary fibrosis
Brother: died of pulmonary fibrosis
Niece: on ventilator with assumed pulmonary fibrosis
Son: diagnosed type 1 diabetic

I'm basically the only "healthy" member of my immediate family left.

Death is not an experience we observe. If we die of old age, or have the ability to examine our physical condition after an accident before dying, we may get to observe the failures in our biological systems that give us the false sense we exist separate and distinguishable from the universe around us. We do not observe death itself.


When you accept the impermanence of our current condition, you can better use this experience to suit yourself. I advocate doing that.


Don’t get me wrong, feel the grief. I am not trying to turn it off. I am actually trying to being you in to it. I have learned experiencing it wholly is how I understand it and process it in a productive manner. That is what I am talking about, face it head on instead of being in denial about it. The reason why this is surprising to you is not because it all happened close together. It is surprising (and therefore upsetting) because you forgot this condition is ephemeral.

I am sorry for grief man. I wish you and your family peace and understanding.

Death is amazing opportunity to celebrate a persons life.

I am sorry for your losses. So much more than that, I am so glad your life was enhanced as a result of existing along side them, and theirs was a result of your contributions as well. You celebrate that man.

However non existence is not an experience.

In a propagating mental cycle of fear and denial, our understanding of death is limited. Fear and anxiety about it put us in denial, then that denial prevents us from exploring so we don’t understand it and the fear and anxiety remain.


Accept it. Right here and now. You and everyone you know and love is going to die. The guy who you flipped off because he didn’t use a signal or whatever will lose all of his loved one as you are now and he will feel this. Is it still worth it or now can you have some more empathy and compassion for him? Understanding death (understanding there is nothing to understand) and accepting it will enhance your interpersonal relationships, it will help you achieve goals and become the person you want to be with confidence.

You are going to die. What the **** else is there to be afraid of? The ability to understand our own temporary condition is an amazing gift we can use to benefit us. Now that you have been introduced to this idea, you can explore it yourself. If you find the same peace and inspiration through acceptance as I have, I suggest it is your duty to share it with other people as I have here. It is an amazing gift we all have, we just need to be reminded.

Catbrah is a strong brotha, I haven't even really seen him post what he was going through. I'd be devasted with just one of those losses. Bro lost his entire family in 3 years. As others have said, I'd be turning my house upside down looking for asbestos and all the rest of it.
