It looks like the consensus about protein consumption to build muscle has changed. The literature suggests that 0.8 - 1.2g/kg of lean mass is sufficient to build muscle. So, for a 190 lbs person, 104g protein at max should be sufficient to build muscle and make progress. I'm currently at 120g right now at 190 lbs. Not sure if this is enough.
Evidently, the recommendation of 1-2g/lb of body weight comes from a wide misunderstanding perpetuated by the fitness industry to make more money selling more protein products.

Not really. I've been around 90-100 g at times for long stretches. It was totally fine at first but I actually ended up running into issues with gains, soreness, and recovery as the months went on. These net away as soon as I just upped my protein and made no other changes. That being said, I don't think anyone needs more than 1 gram per lb, but I haven't heard more than that being recommended by any srs fitness industry professional or even dumbass bro influencer in years.

Good thread. I've always thought this. I have had no scientific basis for it other than my intuition and the protein supplement industry's financial incentives. Makes no sense why our diet should require so much of it. Time is starting to vindicate me
For f@ggy BB goals it still matters but there will be consequences to overall health

Most people think that if they weigh 250 and are 30 % bodyfat they need 250 grams of protein per day.
Lean body mass is the key. Fat isnt doing anything metabolically so no need to eat a bunch of extra protein to sustain it.
So this person would probably have about 175 lbs of lean mass and should eat protein according to that."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

Also remember that some studies use enhanced bodybuilders, which is different than a college basketball player or a football player.
Protein consumption varies, and you learn this listening to bodybuilding coaches and gurus in video interviews.
You pick a number, adjust and see how your body responds. There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!
