Many millions catch the flu each year. We're not even close to that number yet. Won't know for sure until it's over, but the mortality rate for this is way higher thus far.

You’re forgetting the flu has a mortality rate of 0.1% roughly. This has a mortality rate between 2-3% so far that’s a massive difference. Corona is also much more contagious by an r factor of 2-2.5 which puts it just below SARS

We’re potentially short millions of hospital beds for the old people who are gonna need it if it rapidly spreads. They gonna shut everything down for a month and try to slow the spread so we can try to avoid that.

It’s not about how many people have died it’s about preventing it from causing hundreds of thousands+ deaths in a potential “Worst case scenario”. Which looking at Italy seems quite possible.

The Wuhan virus is currently showing a 35x mortality rate compared to the flu, while being much more infectious.

A lot fewer people died from ebola too, but I don't see anyone making a comparison with flu statistics to downplay concerns about ebola.
