I've noticed a lot of posters here, are very pro-military and would like to know why.
>inb4 they risk their lives for us
Most military are never deployed; of those who are deployed very few actually see combat. Even assuming that a lot of the military saw combat, there's still the assumption that they their risk lives for us. Which in today's world, is simply untrue. There's a big difference between a soldier fighting in Nazi's in WWII and today's serviceman in Iraq.
>inb4 they serve the country
There's a difference between one's government and one's country.
Government: Elected officials and the wealthy
Country: Everyone; from those at poverty line to wall-street executives.
Here's an example of serving one's country: The "Fukushima 50", powerplant workers who stayed behind to prevent a nuclear meltdown and exposed themselves to nuclear radiation, were serving their country; if they just left, and they could've, ten's of thousands of people could've been hurt.
Serving one's government: going 7,000 miles to fight an invisible enemy and look for invisible weapons. While of course getting oil.
>inb4 they protect us
Everytime a country wants to justify a war effort, it's always to defend or protect.
Hitler was protecting Germany when he began to massacre jews and begun his war effort.
The U.S. congress authorized the war in Iraq "to defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq."
>inb4 you won't be saying that when a war happens and the military saves you
If there ever was a time when we needed to fight for our survival, the military would have no shortage of people. Most people don't want to see their parents, little siblings, friends, and family killed and would sign up (myself included) and would die for a just cause (protecting loved ones from a great treat or fighting for freedom). Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq have been far from this.
Cliffs:
1. Only about 1% of the 350 million people in US are in the military
2. Of those in the military maybe 10% have seen combat.
3. Combat which has been vastly unnecessary; not to protect the nation, but rather serve the interests of few and
I'm not saying military deserves disrespect; I just don't see it being different than any other job. Soldiers know the risk they take when signing up and do so.
I don't understand why all Americans should blindly support their troops though; that's just propaganda.

ive never understood why all military people are automatically considered 'heroes' and revered as heros etc
Dont get me wrong i respect the risks some of the takes and the difficulties they face..but to automatically be reverred as heroes wherever they go? eg the woolwich attack... so much more was made of it due to him being a 'hero' and a soldier etc. I just dont agree that all soldiers are the greatest heroes etcLast edited by KPrince27; 06-06-2013 at 02:02 PM.

After the war in Vietnam we treated our veterans who came back like absolute schit. We saddled them with all the blame and disgrace for America having wasted absurd amounts of money, people, and prestige on what was a seemingly pointless war.
After this, we got extremely guilty and as a result we swung in the complete opposite direction. This is how cultural movements work.
Action-> Treated vets like crap
Reaction-> Treat vets like moral gods and patriots worthy of eternal praise
Synthesis-> Within 10-20 years we'll probably be at a healthy place somewhere in between, where we acknowledge that soldiers are generally good people and serve our country, but also that many people are in the armed forces for personal reasonsWill you still rep me when I'm no longer age:20 and aesthetic?

So you respect anyone willing to go to combat whether it's to protect or for more imperialistic reasons?
Oh we don't have a lot green dots so our comments must be meaningless?
Strong logic.
Most people get their dots from trading, random rep threads ("my birthday everyone get's reps"), or performing tasks for other miscers ("what's the name of this song" 2k reps.

I think the general intention of the people is great, but the cause they are made to fight for is far from a noble one.
The government propogates the idea that we are fighting for liberty, freedom and [insert any noble quality] but in reality the only people who benefit from this are the corporations and politicians. The veterans [many who end up getting shafted despite their service] and the rest of the citizens end up footing the bill while those interest groups sip on wine and smoke cigars.Avoidance of sin is lighter than the pain of remorse Umar Ibn Al-Khattab

ok your first statement.."most military are never deployed.." wow..Really? Where exactly did you get such information? Did you pull that out of your but or do you have an actual legitimate source. the second part..wow..you know i really have nothing but derogatory comments left to say so I'm just going to hush now. As a military spouse i can say you are extremely misinformed and you are on my "He must be an idiot" list.

Yes *******. What the **** are you doing that's so great after 16 years on this earth? You can disagree with war or the reasons for going to war but you can't disagree with the fact that it takes a big set of balls to sign up to potentially get shot or blown the hell up.

That makes a lot of sense actually, poverty repped.
That was one of the biggest points in my OP. Yes the modern military does put their life on the line, but it's not protect or defend. It's for more imperialistic reasons.
So you meant physical stats, I still don't see how that's relevant in a discussion about politics other than that we're on a bbing site. If I was offering lifting advice while being 5'7 and 150, yeah that'd probably be retarded.

Oh laaawwwdd this thread is gonna get people mad. If you risk your life you have balls. Doesn't matter the reasons why it's just fact and you should get respect for it. However military guys are kinda like cops where they get told what to do and enforce it. Even if the order is stupid or sketchy they still do it. That is what makes them kinda dumb. You should be fighting and supporting the people not just listening to what one person with "higher authority" is telling you.

I know guys in the military who saw combat in Iraq. I also knows guys in the military who did nothing but sit on their @sses for 5 years and will openly brag about it and how they raked in the benefits. I will say most of the guys I know didn't join up to serve their country, they did it for the benefits of being in the military. But that's not really important.
The point is, there's all sorts of people in the military but if it came down to it, they would be there to defend our country if we needed them to. I think you're right OP, in this day and age there's not a big chance of that happening. Most will never see combat. Some are only doing it as a job. But if we ever did see a war on our turf, they would be there defending us, and that's enough to respect them IMO.
They aren't all going to be heroes but they deserve respect. That's not asking a lot either.

U got some balls buddy, I agree. If i had posted this sht i would have been called a troll.
- Killing people is not cool, the religion and color of the muder/victims shouldnt matter
- Being willing to kill some poor under-armed kunts that pose no threat, under the name of feedom is not cool.
- Fighting fake wars is not cool
Im srs here, also I would never murder/kill a kunt. I would like to know how people that were in actual warfare/combat, lead their lifes knowing they are murderers? Thats more than a small-reason not to join the military/contractor industry. People shouldnt be requested to kill other kunts
