Hey guys,
Im at the point now where i do 3 sets of 6 with 315 on normal stance deadlifts, i get no pain from it just the soreness your supposed to feel. I've heard lots of stories of people i know destroying themselves doing deads and have bad knees/backs for the last 10 years since.
So the question is, should i be using a belt now that im up to decent weight so i dont destroy myself too??
How many of you deadlift heavy weekly without a belt?
I really only do core twice a week due to rugby practice (crunches, planks)
Thanks

It's how you do your deadlift that counts.
A 74 year old friend of mine does over 400 lbs without one.
Your technique can be a make or break with when pulling without destroying yourself.
Get DL technique advice from a qualified powerlifter or experienced lifter.
Using a belt is like an artificial band of muscle wrapping around your body.
That area will be lacking a bit if you use a belt all the time because the muscle in that area does not have to support as much because it has help doing so.
Do you use a belt on the rugby field?
Beltless training carries over better into the real world.
Maybe use a belt for your last and heaviest set.
I have been going beltless for a long time and have not had any issues other than being a little weaker than with a belt.

better get a good belt, its worth the money and the protection it gives your spine
will one prevent injury, not really but its a piece of "insurance" and definitely worth having
when you deadlift one of the key parts of the lift is to inhale and push your belly into the belt, this helps keep internal pressure against the spine.
without a belt you are missing a very important step of the lifthttp://knuckleup.net/

Get a good belt and use it on you top couple of sets.
Some good names to look at are Cardillo and Inzer. Don't buy anything thin or with any Velcro on it. Any belt that's going to provide enough support to be worth using is going to be thick and heavy with heavy hardware on it.
Also, be aware that just using a belt won't automatically make you bulletproof. You still must use the best form you're able to muster at all times. No brain, no gain.

Ironwill and Syndicate are right, get a belt, use it one weight you havent done before and as you progress that new weight becomes old and you dont a bet for it anymore. Its just safer when going for a new weight and I find it gives more confidence to lift.
