I have a terrible habit of chewing the insides of my bottom lip and my gums. I've tried so many different things to stop it - toothpicks, gum, whatever. I do it compulsively, and it's worse than nail biting because you can't really "distract" your lips and gums like you can by keeping your hands busy. It's been going on for about 10 years now and it's f*cking infuriating, especially since it makes me hungry... (anyone who chews a lot of gum would know that chewing without actually eating makes your stomach really pissed off for not getting any food after your brain sends the subconscious signals that food's on the way).
Anyone else do this, or know anyone who has this habit?

It's easier said then done. It takes a great deal of awareness on my part as it can happen unconsciously under periods of stress. It's also a more common habit than many people realize.
There is a theory that it could cause cancer but I think evidence is inconclusive. I make sure to get oral cancer screening done on my dental visits because of the habit.
However, I've never noticed it increasing my hunger.

I've actually slowed down quite a bit myself. The places I bite have developed enough scar tissue that I think it's made me not do it so much since it deadens the sensation.
I've heard some people have cheek chewing habit that can get so bad that surgery is needed to remove the scaring. Luckily I don't have that issue.
