    Exclamation Low Blood Glucose Levels

In one of my labs at school we did a blood glucose experiment. My fasting blood glucose levels was 50mg/dl which is very low. Normal fasting levels are around 70-100mg/dl. Kind of scares me to see it be that low, especially because the next lowest level in the class was 67mg/dl.

Is there anything that could be causing this? I eat really healthy I dont think my diet would be the problem. I did take a multi and fish oil before my lab, im not sure if that could affect my glucose levels. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you ever experienced bouts of hypoglycemia (ie, do you ever feel dizzy/unfocused if you haven't eaten in a little while)? If you haven't noticed anything then I probably wouldn't worry too much. If your diet is relatively low carb, I imagine your fasted blood sugar would be lower. Regardless, let your doctor know about it next check up (schedule it sooner than later if you are really worried about it).

I am type 1 diabetic, and even the best bg meters are really not that accurate. If you did multiple tests and averaged them over multiple days then maybe talk to a doctor, but I dont think one test in a school lab is cause for concern unless you have been experiencing the side effects of hypoglycemia like mortgage pointed out. If you are worried though, talk to a doctor.

No, not at all. And I have a pretty high carb diet.

Im just worried that maybe my liver or pancreas isnt working to its full ability. I know when blood sugar levels are low the pancreas releases glucagon which signals the liver to break down and release glucose into the blood. Not really sure, ill mention it to my doc next time I go in for a check up.

Yeah thats a possibility. But after my fasting level was measured we ate some ice cream and then measured our levels from there. At the 45min mark my levels dropped below the normal 70mg/dl level. Im sure if I measured it again at the 1 hour mark it would have dropped into the 50s.

    fasting: 50mg/dl
    15min: 76mg/dl
    30min: 88mg/dl
    45min: 67mg/dl

what does your eating pattern look like? although there's a chance that how you eat has no correlation with your blood glucose level, some can experience more steady energy with more frequent feeding.
coffee helps me ALOT, when I experience low energy levels.

I never really have low energy though. I usually eat every two hours. I had my lab in the morning at 11am. I needed to fast so I didnt have anything to eat since the night before. So I was without food for a good 10-11 hours.
