    Glute-ham raises

This is in my routine for tonight. I had no idea what this was, pulled up this video. There's apparently also a piece of equipment you can do this on, in another video I saw. Anyone do these?

I like this movement so much that I built my own machine. I have to admit though, that this is the hardest movement I've ever tried. LOL Finally, after a few months, I moved up to the next incline...and I have 7 levels to go. :/ I also use it as a hyperextension machine.

are you asking about glute ham raises? Or reverse hypers? I like to do both, but don't have the eqipment at home. Though on my to-do list is to make one or the other as an attachment for my rack.

    Very nice man!

Here is what I got myself for Christmas this year.

I am still getting used to doing GHRs. The hardest part is mental, lowering yourself down slowly. Once you trust the movement, it's a fun exercise.

Here is a great site with lots of info on GHRs (tons of videos): http://www.glutehamraise.org/

This is a great free e-book on the GHD: http://www.biggerfasterstronger.com/...Ham%20Book.pdf

glute ham raises. but, not being familiar with these at all...i pulled up a video...and the one with a partner came up first, i saw the others with the equipment...but i figured this was also a viable alterntative. it is, but rowyn mentioned to me that ''falling'' to the mat, is not the right form. so i did these tonight, but looks like not with the right formation. I don't know what a reverse hyper is.

In order for the GHR to be affective the HAMS should do the work and that means taking you down (eccentric movement) and bringing you back up (concentric movement)

No, I agree ....Rowyn commented about it in the female section, where I posted this too. So...what I did tonight wasn't it. I just took it from the vid I watched. I appreciate your feedback, thanks. I will have to see if the gym has this piece of equipment for these, but I have been all around it, and haven't seen anything like this there. Which is too bad. This could be a great exercise to add into my routine. We'll see.

I've never seen a GHR machine at any the gyms I've ever belonged to either. I think they are pretty rare or found in gyms that cater to athletes.

I've experimented with a couple of workarounds and this one is the best one I've found so far

Search for ghetto glute ham raise on youtube for other ideas...you can also use stability ball or bosu balls but I like the leg ext machine the best.

doing them with your knees on the floor or that flat-bench would make me cringe for the knee-caps
wiggling them around with all your weight on your patella could be a serious mistake
if there was some kind of cushion or gel-pack with a dimple that your knee caps fit into/ and the weight was transferred to a larger surface area around the cap i would say great
that one on the bench looks injurious

I really want to try these but no roman chair in my gym....so will have to stick with back extension.

I'm in complete awe of those who made their own...too cool.

Looking at the photo you would be in the GHR facing right with the back of your shins under the pad and you feet flexed under the left end. I wear knee pads that have a channel for the knee cap and put a padded mat in front of GHR so when I go down I'm not slamming my elbows into the floor. Obviously this unit dosen't make for a full ROM but it works good enough for my investment.

What would be the benefit of doing these instead of a dead lift or leg curl?

uugh yeah that must be why I mentioned knee pads at least three times. One could just put a pad on the bottom of the GHR. It's the same as someone holding your feet on the floor.

You don't really do them instead of dead lifts of leg curls. I do them in addition to the exercises. Much like the dead lift and squat, GHRs are a compound movement that works the whole "posterior chain".
