In Arnold's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, I see that Arnold criticised Mike's posing as he appeared to be under a lot of pressure and he rushed through posing . I also read how Mentzer's stomach bulged out in the 1979 Mr Olympia after prejudging.
When it comes to Ray I see that Arnold criticised him for looking at his bodyfat % too often and that it was the reason he did not win the Mr.America as he was too "cocky" and focused on his physique on paper.
I have not read what Arnold thinks about Mike's Heavy Duty training method-I can not find anything like that on Google!
Also, what was the 1980 Mr.Olympia backstage confrontation about (the one with the finger pointing!)

Does Arnold Schwarzenegger not like the Mentzers/HIT?
5x5 is the greatest program ever (well, so far).

I don't think I remember reading that. :/ At any rate, Mike Mentzer is an amazing poser. IMO, the best poser of any bodybuilder. Frank Zane would be second. Arnold 3rd. Ed Corney, tbh, I don't think is that great. The transitions are a bit lacking to me, and some of the stills are too exaggerated. Still good poser however.

Arnold and Mentzer were in opposite training camps, HIT is like the opposite of the high volume workout of Arnold and the gold's gang. And yeah i think Mike was a bit taken aback when Arnold came out from no where in 1980 to win. So as competitors they were rivals, but unlike with Lou; it kind of went on after they had left the stage.
Theres also a famous interview with dorian yates(2nd gen HIT): when asked what he thought about Arnold, he replied "Arnold who?". But to his credit went on to say that he respected what arnold did for the sport, but didnt believe in his trainingLast edited by Darren in Gym; 01-21-2009 at 02:05 PM.

Arnold robbed everyone in the 1980 Mr. Olympia and Franco did too in the 80s they were both in the worst shape of their lives( but I will admit that is not saying much) while Mentzer was very strong shape. CBS actually flew a crew and taped the 80 Olympia but decided not to broadcast it after it was over, that interests me.
HVT - for noobs and genetically and mostly chemically assisted
HIT - everybody

I did a HIT training for arms once and it sucked. I only did 2 sets for bi's and tri's and during the exercise, it was intense. But 10 minutes later I couldnt even tell i worked arms.
On average I do about 15 sets for arms, 24 sets for chest, 30 sets for back and legs and about 24 sets for shoulders doing 8 sets for each deltoid head. I think i'm one of the few who respond to this type of training.
I beleive JFT>HIT

Hahahahahahahahaha. Thanks for the laugh.
The real answer: Politics is what let Arnold win the 1980 Olympia. That's why it wasn't broadcast on T.V. because even (NBC or CBS?) thought it was complete bull****, and it was. It was a gift plain and simple.
As far as the comment about Dorians training being susceptible to injury is completely false. Dorian suffered every single one of his injuries in pre-contest prep, not during the offseason. He said himself he pushed himself too hard in contest prep which was a mistake, it has no bearing on the training style itself or its effectiveness, quite the contrary.
Arnold trained the way he did and believed his training to be best because that's what worked for him. Back then there wasn't really an offseason bulking time and then diet down for the show. Those guys stayed pretty lean year round and used high volume type training to help burn calories instead of doing cardio. We know a lot more about training and nutrition as well as drug protocols these days and Arnolds way of training is antiquated at best. There's absolutely no reason to be in the gym for 3+ hours working out when you can induce hypertrophy with 1-2 maximum effort sets and get the hell out.Welcome to thunder dome, bitch.

Interesting.... I'm trying to decide whether or not you're serious..
By the way, if by dwarfed, you mean he was a bit taller than everyone else, then yea, but even then, dwarfed is a bit much.
Mike Mentzer was shredded. He's one of the few bodybuilders that can pull off the stomach vacuum. So...there's some stomach control for ya.OG 2004 Join Date

I have the video Total Rebuild.
It is true that Arnold was not as big as in the 70s , but he had more definition than before.
If you look at the lineup he stands out , not only in length, but he had the biggest chest / arms of them all.
There where others with even better definition , but Arnold got that "winner" look when doing his posing routine.
It was nothing special, but the crowd went nuts.
His charisma was bigger than all other competitors together.
Like Tom Platz said " Arnold is body building. " and " you want to be like Arnold "....

blahblahblahPOLITICSblahblah...beyond a joke.
Instead of taking a lame Mike Mentzer cop out, why don't you explain objectively who should have won and why?
If you love bodybuilding, it doesn't matter how long you spend in the gym. HIT promoters love to push the myth that it works for everybody just the same.No crew crew.

but why was there a backstage arguement between the two?
Also, with all of Mentzer's evidence on HIT and how it rocks, what did Arnold say in response to that? He must have said something about the pros of HVT/the negatives of HIT or he himself would be kicking himself and going to try HIT instead!5x5 is the greatest program ever (well, so far).

is it that famous picture? im surprised no-one else has commentated
as far as i can remember, Arnold was allowed to compete in that olympia at very short notice, even though the stipulations of MrO require 6 months advance or something... Anyway Menzter was set to win that year or at least thought so and was pissed when arnold was let in... Then arnold said something about mentzers mouth being bigger than his belly (or something like that)
someone else please clairfy
