what's the going rate for scrap? What are the weight stacks typically made of anyway? I am starting to think some of these "home gyms" could be flipped at a scrap yard for a few dollars.

where do Hamptons rank as far as plates? I found some at a second hand store listed at $0.75/lb - not sure if they are the deep dish or not. They also had some Ivankos (just regular iron olympic plates). Of course all their plates are $0.75 - the Hamptons, Ivankos, Chinese cheapos - all the same. Wondering if I can get a discount to but multiple plates, they have a lot of them.

i'm pretty sure the olympics are worth more- i see a lot of standard yorks, not as many olympics. of course, i'm looking for olympic yorks, so there probably won't be any for sale.
.75 is pretty good for ivanko and hampton plates. not a steal, but not shabby."If there must be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may have peace." -Thomas Paine

My first CL purchase.
I got a good deal on some stuff yesterday. This was my first experience buying equipment off CL, and turned out pretty good.
Got this for $100:
As well as this for $100:
And this for $50:
This piece is missing the top pad to do the leg curls, but have contacted Body Solid to see if I can order a new one. There is no spoon.

Yea the store has A LOT of weights and since they don't value the Hamptons & Ivankos more than the cheap Chinese stuff, I am gonna ask for a discount if I buy up multiple plates. If I can get them down closer to $0.50, I'll be happy. PLUS I found some vintage Yorks this weekend I am gonna try to go back and get - that guy knows the value but they'll make me happy.
So is $0.50/lb good for standards too? I want to pick up some standard weights to use when I make some farmers handles.

it's a little more than i'd pay, but there are always lots of cheap plates on cl here. if you are looking for weights for farmers, and don't expect them to be perfect, it isn't too bad. i mean look at the alternative- $1/lb for new.
i need to go check out my local used equipment stores and maybe some pawn shops/scrap yards again. that's always a fun day, and sometimes you get lucky."If there must be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may have peace." -Thomas Paine

I would not pay .50/lb for standards. They can be had cheap if you scour Craiglists or local garage sale ads listing 'weights'. Last night, I picked up 25 10lb pancake plates for
25 cents/lb.
Guy was selling all his weights for .25/lb so I grabbed the pairs of 25/20/15 kg bumper plates he was selling also. After he said 'don't know brand, they are a weird name', I was hoping the were 'Eleikos' but they are 'Shangai' . In nice shape and still a steal at .25/lb, IMO.Last edited by ffrink; 06-27-2011 at 07:55 AM.

Yeah, I already fixed the pullup handles.
All the equipment looked very lightly used.
Only problem I am having is finding the missing part to the leg extention/curl machine. Body-Solid's "assembly manual" is nothing but a picture and list of parts. No actual assembly instructions. Their customer service is pretty poor as well, they have no idea. Just sent me the same manual I have. Dude on the phone sounded high as a kite or near pass out level drunk. There is no spoon.
