NFL has harder hits than any sort of Rugby, no denying that.
Obviously you can't hit as hard in Rugby League or Union because there's no protective gear and the idea isn't to kill the other team members.
Rugby League is a tougher sport overall though. Couldn't care less about all the fanboys who say otherwise. It's the simple truth.

in rugby you can see the tackles coming and generally in AFL you cant see them coming. a few guys generally get polaxed during the game.
Thanks Ronnie, you're a true legend

NFL produces the biggest hits for two main reasons. First off NFL players (excluding O- Lineman) are much Bigger, Faster and Stronger than the AFL and Rugby players. Secondly the AFL and Rugby players cant go full speed at each other often due to the fact that there is no protective gear especially on the head. Then there is the fact that these cool AFL and Rugby hits are hits were on man dosent see another one coming while in the NFL many times both men are coming at eachother full speed instead of just one. The car that hits a wall at 70 wont have the impact that two cars hitting eachother at 70 will have. Also keep in mind that as a football player you will have contact on every play, ther will be no running around without it.

the hits in NFL may be marginally harder (due to the size - as the big guys are BIG - intermittent nature of the game - players fresher etc) but i think this is offset by the padding. So on the whole, with the variable of protection taken into account, things are pretty even to me. A big hit is a big hit and what ever code of sport it involves is alright by me

Now ever year the AFL play a game of gaelic football against an irish team. it uses a round ball that can be kickd through soccer goals or over football posts. fights break out every year and it was called off this year as it got out of hand .. here are some vids ...

nrl for sure.
why pick between league and union when you can usually watch both.
just in my world this is...
top international rugby union = state of origin > international rugby league > finials of super 14/ European club match cup = good nrl game > normal league game > normal union game
love em both. although have only played union, since i was on the lighter side at school and usually fitted into scrum half.
