I have no trouble believing that.
One of the former clients of my employer made a career working at Braum's. She was in her late 50s or early 60s, and had a net worth of multiple millions of dollars, saving her wage earnings since she was a teenager and still working at the store-level. She drove a beat up pickup truck and didn't dress flashy.
Ironic that a lot of the people ostensibly flaunting their wealth are actually hopelessly in debt, and a lot of rich people don't appear so.

Luckily lumber is starting to fall a little bit, at least here they are. I have to supply bottled water to my crews and I've been purchasing the 40 count at Costco for years for $2.99. It just recently rose to $3.19 with a limit of 2 per customer!!
Overall though things are definitely inflated here. Portland minimum wage is now $14.00/hr and many restaurants/small employers are struggling to find staff. Many places are hiring at 18.00+ per hour for entry level servers/kitchen staff etc. I have a retail store and we've pretty much raised our prices 15-20% across the board. I also have a construction business and thrown out some pretty ridiculous prices that would have got me laughed out of the industry 3-4 years ago. We are still struggling to get a lot of our supplies. I've had open orders on some products from April with no ETA.

A little bit of inflation has been hitting everyone in last few years. When inflation hits, one of the first thing which people start thinking about is reducing cost of living, especially in grocery and transportation. At the same time, they try to find out the best ways to invest their money and are more careful while spending it.

I buy a lot of toilet paper, enough to stock about 40 bathrooms. That cost has gone up about 40-50%. So has beef and ammunition. New and used vehicles too. A $20 sheet of plywood is now $50. I've also raised my weekly rental rate. It was $200/person, now it's $250/person.
