Spent 6 days in Tulum in mid May. Weather is pretty amazing and it was great seeing the cenotes and trying the taco places in the town area.
The women are stacked in the hotel/beach strip (even though they seemed to be European/American women). Only issue I had was my gf got pulled over for headlights being off. We paid the cops 1500 pesos. yikes.**Dallas Misc Crew**

June - August are the worst times to visit either Playa del Carmen or tulum. For the last two or three years the coast has been ravaged by sargassum blooms In the summer. So you won't be able to swim on most of the beaches since they're covered in a brown putrid smelling crust of rotting seaweed. The actual beaches are also infested by mounds of rotting seaweed.
Google "sargazo Mexico" to see some pics. There are a few beaches in the area that are unaffected by the sargazo problem (Isla mujeres or holbox) having said that there are also many attractive things over there other than the beach.
There's hundreds of cenotes (fresh water sinkholes) lots of cool Mayan ruins and you can still go diving in the coral reef since sargazo affects only the direct shoreline. Summer is low season over there so you could get nice deals in flights and acomodation)
WiFi does suck but Americans exaggerate on their claims they want 10/10 internet the time. There's wifi everywhere just don't expect San Francisco speeds.
Also checkout bacalar which is down south 2 hours away from tulum. A nice little town that sits right next to a turquoise fresh water lagoon. It's nice quiet and cheaper Than tulum. Tulum is cool but it's also overpriced, but it sits in an ideal location for a base since your in the middle of the place, so you can go easily north to PDC or down south to bacalar or west to Yucatan.
If you like warm weather (it hot as phuck over there) Mexican food ( the food there is unique to the rest of the country) and ancient history and archeological sites you'll have plenty of fun.
Dont mind the weird guy saying how it's boring and there are no hot women over there because he watched a couple YouTube videos (lol) plenty of people over there having fun so it's easy to socialize and meet people in general.
Ps don't buy drugs there since the cartels are evil scumbags and they shouldn't be encouraged

Checkout muyil which is 15 minutes down south of tulum. You can do a day trip while staying in Tulum. There's a really Cool archeological site there with smaller but cooler pyramids than the main tulum ones. Also you can take a boat tour over there to go to the biosphere reserve down there and see dolphins / manatees and such. Worth a visit for sure

Good point about the sargasso seaweed. It was pretty bad but some hotels/restaurants clean them up in the morning.
I would second staying somewhere away from Tulum/downtown to save money and see more of the culture.
Don't mess with drugs or you can find yourself in trouble I'm sure
Some places that I visited while there

Nice OP. Love this thread srs. Hope you have a lot of fun. Update us regularly want to hear your thoughts on it. I was thinking of doing the same thing and may go to Colombia, Mexico, or somewhere in Latin America in a couple of months and WFH there srs.
I went to Tulum before COVID and it was amazing! had the most fun, enjoyed it way more than Cancun. Went to a bunch of local spots where some of the people dont speak english but they are super friendly. I look Latin so a lot of people would speak Spanish to me lol this area is by hostel che (party hostel). Lots of locals, chill af, safe, loved the bars there. Lots of house music there if your into that.
Went to a beach in Tulum (i wish i can remember whats it called) we asked a taxi driver to drive us to the beach and he did. I swear I never seen a more attractive foreign woman in my life and I been to miami. Majority are from Europe. They have cool day clubs and stuff. Very relaxing. Very lit But expensive to get a hotel on that beach. If i go there next time may get that since the nightlife there looked nice but we dident go at night.
This was a few months before COVID hit and now i feel like tulum is not lowkey anymore since too many wanna be insta influencers srs but still it should be fun.

If you want to see pristine beaches free of sargazo go to isla mujeres instead of cozumel. The beaches on the "no sargasum" side of cozumel are very rocky and have little to no sand. They're cool for snorkeling or diving but they wont give you the postal view of white sand beaches and pristine turqoise.
That's Isla mujeres and there is no sargaso year round because of the currents and its geographic location
beaches in Cozumel are more "rocky" like this:

Unless he's planning on openly selling drugs infront of other dealers he should be fine. You're more at risk of getting scammed by taxi drivers/tour vendors/etc than cartel violence, If you rent a car do not leave valuables in the trunk ever, since it's common for cars to get opened and looted over there that Is a more common thing. Also if you rent an airbnb ret one that is not located at the ground floor, because daytime break ins are a thing as well but units above ground level are safer and easier to keep protected

Don’t go to Tulum. I was there a few weeks ago. Playa is better and far cheaper.

That's a gross overexageration. The colors changed in late 2019 early 2020 not so much because of human activity directly but because there was abnormal flooding caused by excessive rain in late 2019. There colors have been coming back and they're almost back to normal now, srs.
Those pollution and deforestation problems are real and very sad tho
