It is cold.
It's incredibly cold. Not like normal earth levels of cold, but cold like Death.
It also rains a lot. Also it is dark a lot; I don't know how much, but it seems like more than it is light.
In America, April showers bring May flowers. In Finland, April showers bring freezing rain, misery, suffering and death.
The highlight of a Finnish persons day seems to be sitting around in a sauna staring at the floor.
Also, Finnish people are not prepared to have strangers walk up to them and start chatting. They don't seem to care for that at all. It's important to let them know you are an American right off, then they can manage to barely tolerate you when you do crazy stuff like laugh in public or smile at people you don't know.Last edited by eomrat; 07-27-2020 at 11:53 AM.

While I agree with you on many points Pockets I would still rather live here than the country I came from. Riots? That was a nightly occurrence... outside of our house sometimes. Burning busses, molotov cocktails, bullets flying, tear gas. Yeah, I still remember us having to put wet wash cloths on our faces to combat the tear gas. Freedom of speech? Say something bad about the President and you'll likely get arrested. Air pollution? People have been walking around with masks and bandanas to cover their faces since the 1980's. Government corruption you say? Hah! Where I came from it's expected! They may be the most corrupt country in the world.
Yes, this country is F'd up and it is a joke that we have only Trump and Biden to choose from. But damn, I'll still take this F'd up country over many, warts and all."Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by a$$holes"

Cass, it can happen anywhere. But I was in a place that has been a sh*thole FOREVER. If you've lived in hell Cass, anywhere is a step up. I guess I have a different perspective than most. I've lived here for over 40 years and take nothing for granted. I'm thankful for the little things that most people don't give a second thought (running water, air conditioning, toilet paper). Ok, maybe not toilet paper anymore. Some of these things my friends and family still in that country don't have access to. A car? You'd have to be rich to own one there. Or a crook.
I feel guilty sometimes that I was lucky enough to be able to come here and make something out of myself. This country gave me that opportunity. Don't get me wrong. I worked for everything that I got. Harder than most because I'm a foreigner. But I didn't complain because I didn't want anything handed to me. No freebies. No food stamps. No government aid. NADA. And I wouldn't want it any other way."Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by a$$holes"

If the Dems get their way and gain power in the Whitehouse and the Senate I am actually afraid of where we are headed as a nation. You have vocal minority mouthpieces like AOC and these idiots in charge are letting her and people like her dictate what the policy will be. Ilhan Omar wants to turn this country into the same sort of ****lian $hithole she escaped from.

Thanks Fish. Like I said, this country is not perfect. I think the two party system divides the people. Hell, it divides families. Too often, you are so blindly biased to your own party that you can't see (or refuse to see) the other's POV. The health care system leaves a lot to be desired. Elderly care is severely lacking. No place is perfect. But some are infinitely better than others.
I'd rather not say Corbi. I know it's ridiculous but I am still paranoid to speak out against my former country 40 YEARS LATER. There was a reason why we left that godforsaken place (beyond what I've stated) that I don't care to divulge. Even in this seemingly insignificant forum. But I will tell you this. We take a lot for granted in this country. For some people it's because it's all they've ever known. Young kids who feels entitled. Older folks who should know better.
I urge everyone to take a step back, specially now with this chaos all around us, and take a long, hard look at your life. What you've done, what you have, your family, your job, your health. You may find that you're doing ok after all."Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by a$$holes"

As fellow immigrant and Naturalized American, i'm with you ladies.
America is my HOME. It's our adopted Nation. It's the last bastion of FREEDOM (though we are quickly losing what's left of our Liberties).
I'd rather be left alone, like most Libertarians. Problem is two large forces are colliding. And those who want to be left alone will be sucked in.
So I plan to stand next to American Patriots at Concord Bridge. What Patriots you ask? It won't be the commie left. This above all..
To thine ownself be true..
And it must follow, as the night the day..
Thou can'st not then be false to any man..
