Hey guys, I know that I'm being a lazy ******* but I just don't want to go through 83 pages to find book series recommendations.


So can anyone recommend me a (couple) book series to start off with? Can usually crush a 400-500 page book in ~12 hours if I'm into it.

Surprised by all the Jim Butcher love.

Tried the first Dresden book, struggled to get further than 50%.

The Codex Alera series (well first book anyway), is my lowest rated fantasy book on Goodreads. Filled with every possible generic fantasy trope imaginable with mediocre world building to boot.

Also tried his new series The Cinder Spires this week and couldn't finish the first book.

His writing and stories do not resonate with me at all. Feel like I'm missing something. I'm a very picky reader in general but I feel like I've tried a lot of Butcher books



One of my all time favourites. Patrick Ness is a great writer. Read A Monster Calls is you have a chance, think it just got made into a movie but the book is great. One of the only books I've read in one sitting

I really like the Dresden Files books. As mentioned above I was hesitant with the first one, but kept reading and they're great. Quite enjoy the humour. Read ~1-8 in jan/ feb and just finished #9 last night. I can feel another binge coming on.

I finished the first Dresden, but aside from a few shining moments, it seemed pretty simple and dull. Plus, Dresden being such a white knight feminist was pretty off putting lmao

Pretty much every Dresden Files fan agrees that it starts getting good at book 3 brah.
I remember reading the first book and not being all that impressed, but it was interesting enough for me to finish it and move on to the next one.

Book 3 onwards I was hooked srs.

Usually im right with you on book choices, but i couldnt do this. I bought all the Dresden books based on your req, and the first one nearly killed me hahaha

EDIT: Any good Stephen King books you guys recommend btw? (Aside from his obvious famous ones). I just bought his relatively new one called 11.22.63 and it looks awesome.

Ended up getting it and the 3rd book was a fuking short story about that little hipster Auri. Was pissed. The first two are awesome though. About halfway through Way of Kings right now and loving it. Waiting on the second book to arrive, was a little bummed the 3rd book isn't done yet though.

Last 13 books I've read recently have all been Japanese light novels. Drastic difference from western writing, there's a lot more inner monologue and more emphasis on characters than climax lead ups.

Only 150 pages or so into "The Way of Kings" but I'm already enjoying it more than Name of the Wind. I'm glad to hear Sanderson writes pretty quickly, unlike some other fat fuk lazy fantasy writers.

Agree with 11/22/63 - one of the best books I've ever read, actually. Other King books that may or may not fall into fantasy category that you might like: Under the Dome and Mr. Mercedes really stick out in my mind as being excellent.

yes yes yes its very good. give it a chance. really goes for any giant fantasy story, there may be a 50 page struggle at first.

it was interesting. but definitely tough to get through. 500% increase from Malazan books in the philosophical monologues and the just downright bizarre dialogue. And it was already sky high

Yes. It starts a bit slow, but gets much better. Almost done with Way of Kings. Can't wait to start the next one.

a few of us here. Its my favorite fantasy series besides Lord of the Rings. It's really hard to find anything recent that's even comparable imo.
