Good bit of ATT cell service was down most of the day and I think a healthcare tech company said it was attacked yesterday. I think ATT is back up now.

Both Verizon and T-Mobile put out statements saying their networks were fine. Any issues their customers were having, were likely due to trying to contact ATT customers. Perhaps they are lying.

A phone is something most of us take for granted but others that are less fortunate without them are at a bit of a disadvantage in today's society.

We were at a homeless encampment in the city before Christmas last year giving out some food donations. My buddy asked one fellow if there was anything else he really needed and he said minutes for his phone.

He had been trying to find work and the phone really helped with this. In the interim he said that he used to put ads up online and on physical bulletin boards offering himself for odd jobs. Without the phone he couldn’t get calls from prospective jobs.

I think of this guy often and wonder how he is doing.

I travel all over the world. I still have a drawer full of cheap phones. I'd usually buy one for $20 when I got to a country or buy a sim card for a phone I had. Credit is cheap.

In Africa, for example, but throughout the "developing world" -- and this has been true for 20 years -- the poorer people need phones to get news about jobs. They get paid in phone credit, they use phone credit to buy groceries at the store, phones are the bank. And again, this was way before we started using Apple pay or water. It was so much more convenient than the normal system for communication and money handling that they just leap-frogged everything else and went to using phones for everything.

Up an Amazon tributary in 2004, I'd see signs with a drawing of a phone and an arrow that said "150 meters". That was where there was a rise you could walk up to get a signal. In the remote villages with no electricity they'd have a solar panel for charging and would build a little shelter in the place near the village where you could get a signal. All the "indigenous people" had mobile phones.

In India in 2007, the low-caste "untouchable" woman cleaning the toilets had her phone go off and pulled it out of her sari.

I was up in the hills of Vanuatu in the South Pacific in 2017 in a region where there's no electricity. At night we were at a meeting in a village. They fired up a generator for lights. When we came out, all local people pulled out their phones to use as flashlights. Again they had solar panels to charge.

How does someone fleeing a country with no status, no job, no money are able to make fricking phone calls and have a cell plan??????

You have a job, I have a job. If I loose my job and loose my benefits, I loose my phone service, I can’t make calls or connect to the Internet unless I go to free WiFi. Where the fuk is free WiFi at the border????
