    Iron plates maintenance outdoors

    Hi All,
For a variety of reasons, I am forced to store my weight plates outdoors for a while. They will be fully covered when it rains (rarely here). But my question is what should I do to best maintain them on a regular basis from rust, etc?
Is it just normal soap/water wipe down and dry, and some brass brushing of rust away? Or should I be using some kind of oil?

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Could they fit inside of a large plastic rubbermaid type tub? Throw some of those moisture absorbing silica packs in the tub to deal with any humidity?

Desiccant packs only work if the container is airtight. I doubt the average storage tub like that is airtight. May work if you sealed the lid with a bead of silicone sealant?

If they aren't in direct sunlight you could use POR15, its a very hard paint used for undercoating and waterproofing car chassis.

I have used it before on some of my vehicles in the past. If you do go this route, its pretty durable paint, but it will be hard to get off hands or clothes and you really want to use the entire can all at once because the paint will harden to where you can't get the lid off. Apparently you can sink a wood screw in the top of the can and remove the screw to pour out just want you need and replace so it doesn't waste the can, but I haven't tried this. From my experience, the paint will harden really fast when exposed to air. You won't have to worry about rust if you paint them with this.

I only mention sunlight because it is supposedly degraded by UV but I have never heard of anyone having this problem.
