PS5 Boss on Why They Did Not Make a Weaker PS5 Version

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan explained Sony’s decision to pass over on making a lower-cost, lower-spec console, citing that those kinds of hardware offerings haven’t done too well in the past.

“First of all let me say that we respect the judgment and philosophy of our competitors. Obviously price is an important factor, and we respect the strategy of our competitors. That said, we are completely convinced of our strategy and its implications,” said Ryan.

“One thing I would say is that introducing a low-spec console at a low price range hasn’t produced pleasing results in this industry’s past. We have also considered such an approach, but I also know that other operators have tried and had problems.”

Ryan says the conclusion comes from research that says customers want to invest in a console for long-term and use it for as long as 7 years. “We want the products we buy to be future proof,” Ryan says. “We are not looking to buy a product that will become obsolete in a few years.”

Although Sony isn’t introducing a lower-spec model this generation, the company revealed the PS5 Digital, a cheaper system with the same specs as a standard PS5, except without a physical media drive. The digital PS5 costs $399 compared to the $499 physical media version.

Eh, I see what he's saying, but it's not fully true. Look at the iPhone 5C, that chit was a piece of crap and still sold a chit ton, even though people think it flopped. Xbox Series S has the same chip as the Series X, it just has a weaker GPU and what not. If you truly wanted consoles to be future proofed, then you would never release a Pro/X version of a console. I think the Series S is super attractive for gamers who just do not give a chit about power and specs, and just want to play the games.

I mean a PS4Pro is more powerful than a Series S so they kinda already got a low end system.

MS is just trying to get as many people in their ecosystem and subscribing to GamePass. A low end system makes sense for them and their strategy but not for Sony.

wut, they still sell the base ps4 alongside the pro. they are doing the samething now.

probably plan on later making a pro that will one up the series x in a few years. This really just means they sell all consoles at a $400 or $500 price vs MS selling some $300 price. And instead of 2 different manufacturing lines they basically just have one with a different case shell. IDK why they cant just say that instead of stupid PR talk.

Hmmm, I wouldnt say you can really compare the base ps4 and ps4 pro in this situation.




They initially made the ps4 as their flagship, and both ps4 and xbox one at the time were made at a time they didnt think they would require all that much power. Then they went ahead and released the pro and 1x .... PS4 Pro and PS4 wasnt even that big a difference in most games to warrant a pro purchase unless you really wanted to play in 4k or just because you wanted an upgrade.


In the current scenario, seems like Sony is once again releasing their flagship as the PS5 without having to compromise with a weaker-specced system until they perhaps release the PS5 Pro then that'll be considered their "weak" system. Seems like their strategy is just to go with the most powerful console they can that's almost on par with the series x before they decide to give us an upgrade down the line should they choose to.



Like mgtp said, it's just different strategies for both Sony and MS. I guess we'll see who had the better one in a couple months/years when we can compare the sales.





I wonder if we're gonna see pro versions of these consoles though, considering these consoles are almost on par with the best pc's right now.

you telling me these exclusive games are not even next gen, but cross-gen ps4 games that are upscaled for the ps5? Yea you could have made an xbox series s version of the ps5..

Except from what Sony says they are PS5 games built for the PS5 where they are developing PS4 ports of them. I mean when you look at gameplay of Black Spiderman, and it's running at 4k/60, that's next gen IMO. Far from what we saw from Halo Infinite.

I am still curious to see all the graphical and performance comparisons by Digital Foundry come November. How does Black Spiderman look and run compared on PS4 and PS5, and how do major multiplats compare between PS5 and Xbox Series X.
