Wink How much mass can pushups add?

Can push ups give me a massive chest with a lot of muscle mass or do they only tone and give your chest a little bit of muscle and then plateau you.

Unless you start stacking lots of weight on your back to add progressive overload, there's only so far pushups can get you.

there is no such thing as toning muscle.

they can give you some if you have very little. A massive chest you will not get, not even somewhat big I would wager

Well you could always progress to single-arm push-ups, feet-elevated single arm push-ups and handstand push-ups (mostly shoulders). A weighted vest would also help.

    "Massive" is very unlikely, though.

Why are you asking? Do you not have access to weights, or...?

Pushups like any exercise will build muscle provided their is progressive over load. At some point in order to overcome plateaus you will need to add resistance and/or make the pushups more difficult by altering your hand spacing. If you don't new muscle will not be created. Doing more will most likely create more endurance but probably not any more mass. At this point your best bet is to invest into a weighted vest.

    Good Luck.

So as long as you weigh enough that you can do 12 or less push ups per set then you wont gain more muscle by doing them?

you will if you do them to failure with increased total volume over time. but adding weight is always a more efficient way to get to your goal. you cannot spend 3 hours doing pushups to get stimulation everyday at some point
