The U.S. government has issued its first geomagnetic storm watch in ~20 years, warning Americans of solar activity that could knock out communications and GPS systems.

According to NOAA, the power grid is at risk and warns Americans of "possible widespread voltage control problems."

The storm is expected to hit Earth on Friday and go through Saturday.

The storm is caused by "a large sunspot cluster has produced several moderate to strong solar flares." (NOAA)

The sunspot is about 16x the diameter of Earth.

The solar storm could also trigger northern lights "unusually far south" on Friday night. (WaPo)

Too cool, we can expect to see some great shots from all over. We get the Northern Lights on the regular, seen then so many times that I usually don't go out of my way to see them but I will go down to the lake tonight if we don't get the cloud cover they are calling for. This one could be the best in many years and I look forward to it.

What if the piercing isn't in my head area? Is that better or worse?

I've survived last night's solar flare without any incidents (or at least none I have memory of). Worried as tonight we'll still be in the edge of the storm ejection, although lesser intensity. You may only be on 45th parallel but I'm 51.6N so it's worse here (and only 4 or 5 miles from the zero "line" Eastern/Western hemispheres)

I haven’t sucked on the thermometer for over week, not out of fear, it’s due to how I’m training, I took a break from 11pm extra work for a little while.

We had pretty much cloudy conditions but the light show was still visible at times. Unfortunately because of my lack of camera skills I didn't capture anything that even came close to the display of color that I seen. So after fukking with that for a while. I decided to put the camera away and pick up a big fat joint, sit back and enjoy the show. It was great in spite of the poor conditions.

Going to try again tonight if it isn't raining or cloudy.

Earth is 4.55 billion years old, first fossil evidence of life is around 3.5 billion years ago. Multicellular life likely evolved a little earlier than 600 million years ago.

So the earth had had life for much longer than it didn't have life but most of that time was single celled organisms.
