It's really amazing/sobering to watch . . . I had seen it once when I was in 8th grade and was really struck by it. Was at Arlington this summer with my family and sat through it twice--it's kind of mesmerizing. You really feel it in your chest when you watch it and when you think about what it means to those troops who guard the tombs.
The museum they have right next to it is pretty amazing too. If you have never been to Arlington . . . it's really something you should visit at least once in your life. You can't comprehend the vastness of it, the magnitude of lives given, etc unless you are there and experience it first hand.*MFC Elder Statesmen Cabinet Crew*

The Sentinels Creed : My Dedication to this sacred duty is total and wholehearted, In this responsibility bestowed on me never will I falter. And with dignity and perseverance my standard will remain perfection. Through the years of diligence and praise and the discomfort of the elements, I will walk my tour in humble reverence to the best of my ability. It is he who commands the respect I protect. His bravery that made us so proud. Surrounded by well meaning crowds by day alone in the thoughtful peace of night, this soldier will in honored glory rest in my vigilance.--------------------------------------These are some damn special men

I haven't yet been there, but would very much like to do so.
Although crupiea did not claim this picture is from Hurricane Sandy, it has been making the rounds as such. It is actually from September (see article here: http://mashable.com/2012/10/29/fake-...-sandy-photos/ ). It does not in any way detract from the valor and dedication of the sentinels.Peace: Lift Long and Prosper!

I'll hope for their safety. Incredible dedication.

It's a shame that we have to distinguish this word these days, but I totally understand and appreciate your clarification.
This is an honorable tradition and is indeed, awesome.
My 80yr old folks came to visit me this wknd. We had a nice dinner out on Sat. evening, and then (at their request) went to Andersonville National Historical Site - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anderso..._Historic_Site
It's modest, but it's awesome. If you're unaware, at least, click the link to see what it is.

This link pretty much sums up what their duties are. Incredible discipline during and after their service is up.

Short video that talks about their prep:
Also, I had never seen this the 2 times I was there personally . . . everyone was extremely quiet. But apparently the sentinels do interact to request silence, to request people to stand during the change ceremony, or to keep people off the plaza.
Kind of sad that they have to tell people to be quiet and respectful . . . you would think that would be something you would strive to do on your own.

The Society of the Honor Guard has a website that is pretty interesting. Lots of information there, some history, an FAQ, information on membership/donations, etc. They also have a place where you can look up information on the sentinels who have or are serving if available.

I've yet to see the nations' capital. I think that is something every American should see. I remember years ago a friend of mine from England visited Washington D.C. He said that the closer he got to the city, the more flags he began to see. He literally stated that he could 'feel the power' emanating from the place. America is a great nation. Not without its' faults. But something amazing to be sure!

They represent us. Well, 'us as we should be perhaps!' We have a depth to us, we Americans, although not that old in years. It is an 'ideal,' something we all should live up to. We didn't start it, not in any sense of the word. We just managed to make it happen despite the circumstances. I am unabashedly pro-American! Ha ha Not to take away from anyone, anywhere. I hear always, in the back of my mind; "USA, USA, USA!" I will always hear that! America the Beautiful! Our men and women in uniform, doing what they do...it just makes you stop and think! We should follow their lead. Some things are to be done just because it is what is.
