I have some whey that expired sometime in the past 2 years. It has been kept in a cool, dry place.

the real shelf life of many supplements is much longer that what the exp date is. I believe there is a standard or law about how long from the mfg date companies can put the exp date. Dry powder, if well sealed has a very long shelf life compared to say a RTD. It is up to you to make the final choice. At two years I'd toss it. but chances are it is still fine to consume.

When a medication/supplement becomes expired, it's the companies disclaimer that that's how long they can guarantee the potency of a product. Smell/taste it. If you don't throw it back up, it should be okay .

Not a mistake. Many products do not expire at all (or at least not for years and years) but are required to have an expiration date because it's a food product. Companies would benefit from putting an early expiry date so that people will throw it out and buy new stuff. I'm currently using BCAAs that "expired" in October and they seem just fine to me.

I have some from May 2014 that expired but it was a large tub and I got other stuff and kinda switched between them the only thing I have noticed is its a little clumpy and doesn't mix up as nice as it did before but its not the worst. I have had protein that I bought new and was just awful so I would say it all up to your opinion. It wont kill you. At least shouldn't????

No its not. Throw it out. I always am throwing anything out dated away in my cousins refridgerator. Listen to the dates on everhything.. Everything has a date for a reason. Throw it out if its expired.

Expiration is only a guideline
Let me first say one thing that is often not known by many people. Except for infant formula, product dating is not generally required by Federal regulations in USA. It is voluntary and of course as you would expect by a corporation, they want to make sure that you buy again. Therefore, the dates are set way below a real expiration date so that you throw away older food and buy new ones, even though it would be perfectly fine to consume.
As for the protein, before doing anything, youll obviously want to examine the powder first-hand to look for any obvious signs that its gone bad. If it contains any clumps (due to moisture getting inside), is discoloured in any way or smells/tastes slightly off, youll definitely want to get rid of it and purchase a new tub instead. Assuming that the powder looks, smells and tastes fine, the next thing to consider is where its been stored and whether or not the tub is still sealed. If the protein powder is still sealed and has been stored in a cool, dry environment, then it should be perfectly fine to consume for quite a long period of time past the expiration date that is listed.
6-18 months past the date will most likely be okay in most cases (again, as long as youre sure that its been stored properly), and technically speaking it may be completely fine for several years afterwards. However, there are no guarantees here, and whether or not you want to consume a protein powder that is two years or more past its listed expiration date or just purchase a new tub is up to you.

If it is within a short period of time and it looks and smell ok maybe. Around 2 years I wouldn't try my luck. For the cost it is easier to replace it.

Over catious?
I live in Sweden and regarding expiration date on dry products, that have been stored in a sealed, unopened container in a dry and not hot environment....expiration date is generally not to be considered even being close to a consumuption deadline.
A pure protein powder as above can easily be consumed many years after expiration.
A good way to check is buying a new tub and compare. If you don't like that idea since you didnt like the taste even when fresh, I would bin it instead of force feeding myself some yuck, maybe writing a complaint to the manufacturer to remove the product
I general though
1. smell it. Does it smel like a new tub - good
2. Taste it,' tastes like a new tub - good. Does it taste like cardboard - bin it.
3.mix it, if it lumps this could just be the "anti lumping" agent not being as effective. As long as it's not lumpy in the can when dry, since that normally indicates moisture, you should be fine.
if all three above checks out, chug it and don't bother about the date on the can.
An opened canister is generally no problem either, as long as it has been kept dry and cool. If it is lumpy due to moisture, I would definitely bin it since the risk of mold bacteria increase dramatically when moist.
Milk on the other hand is not a dry product and goes by totally different rules. A week after expiration here in sweden is no problem (cant say about.other countries), if it has been properly stored (cool 5-6°C). Use nose and taste as a tool. If it tastes or smells bad, definitely bin it.

came across this thread on mens health.

As for the muscle-building mojo of protein powder, it does diminish after the use-by date has passed. You can blame a chemical reaction called Maillard browning: The protein reacts with sugar left over from when the whey was extracted from milk, resulting in a gradual breakdown of the amino acid lysine.
“If you lose lysine, then the powder will not be as complete of a protein,” says Roberts.Death Comes To Those Who Bow Down To Their Fears!!
