For my birthday in May, I want to buy a bottle of scotch that is older than I am (will be turning 22). Any recommendations on a 25 year old that is relatively affordable?

What do you considerable for a 25 yo scotch? $200, $300+?

A good 25 yr old probably shouldn't be affordable.

Also the best age for a scotch is around 16 years (opinions of course) so idk if that will change your mind :P

Well I'm not drinking in April, and lately my monthly alcohol and alcohol related purchases (liquor store, bars, drunk food) has been $200-300 a month lol.

Waiting on a connective flight in Tokyo and only drank 1 liter of glenlivet on the ride over from Dallas before the flight attendant cut me off. Was pacing well and didn't even get drunk

OP enjoys peat and smoke.....try the highland parks (12 year to start)...also the Talisker 10 year old is phenomenal. Finally, the 17 year old Islay Mist is one of the best peated scotches I have had in a while. (laphroig-cant go wrong)

For Irish whiskey try the Inishowen. Heavily peated. Does not taste like a triple distilled Irish whiskey, more like a scotch. Cheers.

Lagavulin 16 is a very good whisky. It's an Islay, so it'll be smokey. Let's say that you will owe your buddy something - he's not giving you a throwaway.

Haven't been able to pick up as much scotch as I would like obviously. Here is my latest purchase since December.

My first purchased Bunnahabhain and independent bottle. Love all the information on the label ie cask number, number of bottles, date of distillation and bottling. Anywho not too sure when it gets cracked open but I'm sure it will be a dandy one.

Same here. Never had it. Just going on the fact that Laphroaig is my favorite scotch.

i would like to say glenlivet.... but i am loving lagavullin 16..... so will go with that

Can't say that I have had the 25 year but I had a night where I tried the 10, QC, Triple Wood, Cask Strength and the 18. I liked the 18 the most, where as some liked the Triple Wood and QC. It is true that smoke and peat diminishes as it ages so if you like younger, fresher scotches like Laphroiag Quarter cask then older isn't necessarily better. It is really just a matter of taste.

I've had the 18 - it's good, maybe less medicinal, softer, more round - go to Opal Divines and get the Laph flight.

Turning 30 next month and don't know what to get. I want to stay around $100 I'll keep browsing the thread as there is a ton of great recommendations and keep sipping my Laphroaig 10yr that is almost gone. I've really grown to love this!! To think, I almost spit it out the first time I tried it. And icetrauma, I haven't forgotten my mistake.

Actual flight - it's supposed to have the 30 yo, but it's not available anymore. So, it's 10, Quarter Cask, and 18. The Glenfarclas flight is pretty good too.

It's all good. Oban and Scapa are good for around $85/bottle.

I know this feel. First bottle I ever bought was ardbeg (because of its glowing reviews), I literally tried giving it away.
What in the fak was I thinking!!!!

Think I'm going to go with the 18yr Oban. I've never had either but reading the taste profiles, I think the Oban 18 is right down my alley. Scapa is def on my taste list though.

sup brahzzz. I used to really enjoy me some Chivas Regal 12 in the summer but havn't had any since. Today, for whatever reason, got the biggest scotch craving of my life. However I decided to go beyond the blend and try a single malt. Liquor in Canada is expensive as fuark so my selection was limited. Picked up some Glenlivet 12 and will be trying in a few hours. How'd I do? Any other recommendations for some good beginner single malts once this is done? From what I understand I don't think I'd like anything overly peaty, but I could be wrong.

Glenlivet 12 isn't bad to begin the single malt journey.
You know Chivas Regal 12 on the rocks was Hunter S. Thompson's drink of choice? (He also dug Wild Turkey 101 on the rocks)

Glenlivet was my 2nd scotch I ever had. 1st one was JW Red label. Tasted like azz! Glenlivet was much more enjoyable.
