Houston officials confirmed the first two cases of coronavirus in the nation's third-largest county Thursday, saying the two were on a trip to Egypt with multiple people, including a man from a nearby suburb who a day earlier became the first Texan to have a positive test result outside of persons repatriated from abroad.

The newest cases involve a man and a woman who are between 60 and 70 years old and remain hospitalized in stable condition, said Dr. Umair Shah, the top health official in Harris County, where Houston is located.


The announcement came a day after Texas health officials announced that a 70-year-old man in Fort Bend County, just outside Houston, had a received a “presumptive positive" test for new virus. Officials said the man was in stable condition. The woman from Harris County who tested positive is an employee at Rice University in Houston.


The university said it had identified 17 other individuals who had direct contact with the employee and had asked them previously to self-quarantine. None of them have reported any symptoms.

Three Marylanders have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement.

"The state’s Public Health Laboratory in Baltimore has confirmed the first three positive cases of novel coronavirus in Maryland," Hogan said. "The patients, who contracted the virus while traveling overseas, are in good condition. We have been actively preparing for this situation over the last several weeks across all levels of government. I encourage all Marylanders not to panic, but to take this seriously and to stay informed as we continue to provide updates.”

The governor is set to hold a press conference at 8 p.m.

Earlier Thursday, the governor submitted to lawmakers an emergency request for $10 million in funding and permission to draw up to $50 million from the state's rainy day fund. That request swiftly passed a state Senate committee.

“We want to thank the Governor and the Department of Health for their quick response and focus on these cases, and are ready to work together to confront this issue and make sure to align the best public response in a calm and collected manner," Senate President Bill Ferguson and House Speaker Adrienne Jones said in a joint statement. I've read that there is a new rapid test being used.

Said that the rapid test has been used in Houston cases and the expectation is that this will increase the number of cases reported.

The case, “presumptively confirmed” this week by a city of Houston laboratory, should ramp up everyone’s readiness about the outbreak, according to Dr. Umair Shah, executive director of Harris County Public Health. The Houston lab this week received a coronavirus test that will enable it to diagnose the disease more quickly and reveal more cases.

A Washington state county, where 31 coronavirus cases and 9 deaths have been reported, has recommended to its 2.2 million residents that they should work from home to help slow the spread of the infectious disease, and further urged everyone over 60 to stay indoors.

Public Health officials in King County on Wednesday recommended that businesses allow their employees to telecommute throughout March in an effort to reduce the amount of face-to-face contact between large numbers of people during this “critical period” in the COVID-19 outbreak.
