To be fair, my experience with higher education in the recent times, even with a human lecturer, wasn't any better.
Was elitist, authoritarian, Leftist higher educations aim to create a culture of automatons all along? Probably.

we might be looking at this from different perspectives though.
Australia has a very ingrained, authoritarian, left leaning ruling class and has for a very long time.
Unlike USA, there is no effective counter balance.
I have seen memes which state to the effect that 50% of people dont have any thoughts.
In the case of Australians, I believe this without a doubt.
