PlayStation London Studio has officially closed its doors

founded in 2002 and based in soho, london, the first-party studio worked on the getaway series and was responsible for the singstar franchise.

It also developed numerous games for playstation’s eyetoy camera, wonderbook, and playstation vr titles vr worlds and blood & truth.

More recently it had been working on an online co-op combat game set in a fantasy london.

In february, sony announced plans to close the studio as part of wider cuts that would see the ps5 maker lay off 900 employees worldwide, or about 8% or its workforce.

“for over twenty years london studio has been home to some exceptionally talented and wonderful people in the games industry,” the studio said in a farewell message.

“as we close the doors, and all go forward to new adventures, we wanted to say a heartfelt thank you, to all our past and present, players and colleagues who have supported us over the years. We’ve had one wild and wonderful journey!

Playstation’s recent restructuring also led to job losses at spider-man studio insomniac, last of us developer naughty dog, and horizon call of the mountain creator firesprite.

Commenting on the move, hermen hulst, who has since been appointed as playstation’s joint-ceo, said the company was “reevaluating” how it operates and that the layoffs had resulted in the cancellation of unnamed game projects.

Buy a quest 3 for 500 bucks, totally wireless, doesn't even need a PC, but you can use a PC to enhance its performance. Can play all your old vr games.

Steamdeck, totally standalone, oled model available, can connect and play just about anything anywhere, can also play offline.

Portal, requires a ps5, no oled screen, can't play offline, can't even connect to wifi that requires a browser login.

Sounds like Sony never stopped to think outside their own ecosystem bubble for a second to the point that they failed to design around flexibility that is becoming increasingly expected for electronic devices.

It also doesn't help that they have been schitty about backwards compatibility for some time now and probably assumed fans would continue going along with it. What they didn't account for in the case of VR is that it's a different ball game for a more niche audience who are easier to piss off when you tell them that their new, expensive device can't play their preexisting expensive and niche library.

To be fair, unlike other studios, Sony's London studio seriously did fukk all, and they were faffing about for 5 years for a device that - as freeburn covered - makes no bloody sense.

Of all the cuts to make, that one at least sounds reasonable unlike Japan Studio for example where they made actual games.
